I think to put too much value on stuff like that opens you up to nastier possibilities as well

You can't assign too much value on how other people feel about what you do

    100% agree with this

if you assign too much value on what other people think of you, doing something inherently against the grain, is either going to be torturous or youll give up.

but even if youre not doing anything like that, its unhealthy

Yeah it's a common thought but I find that for most it doesn't go in both directions

For me both sides of it are equal

    what do you mean?

Like people will say that and for them it's just a way of saying "don't listen to the haters! Be confident", which is essentially just choosing to devalue the input that you dont want to hear. It's a delusional way to navigate human interaction if you are not also willing to devalue the input from others that could be more initially pleasing to you. I don't think it's fair to pick and choose which type matters to you, and I don't think you can do it and be fully genuine.

  • If you are devaluing the negative input from others you are justifying that somehow. It also needs to apply to positive input from others

I guess it would depend on whether the input is valuable/useful to you.

say if I were to go to my moms home town of 200 people, and show them some of my art. or even most people in this province in general. people there are only generally interested in tourist paintings of puffins and icebergs and whales. and they’re like why are u drawing naked people, this is weird. Or if they liked something, I dont think that gives me any useful information either, because they're not my target market. That could push me further into mediocrity and hinder my career.

but then I have the reception from my mentor, whose 90 and been doing this at a high level for like 70 years, which might also be negative say.

which input is more useful to me, to succeed in an international market? obviously, the mentor guy. If i ignored him and listened to people here, It would cripple my career.

so I do think its important to be very selective about whose advice you listen to.

but I also think youre right, that people tune out valuable insight out of insecurity and only listen to yes men. and the line can get blurry and confusing sometimes. and peoples ego get in the way.

if youre going to eschew advice from a particular person, it has to be both positive and negative statements. not just negative ones.

Confidence without self awareness is just delusion at the end of the day.

Well that's different a little bit. Deciding who to accept constructive feedback from based on context is just being practical. I was talking about statements meant just to be negative or statements meant just to be positive
