I think a lot of it probably is the democratization of music creation
Which has lead to a lot of terrible music
But it's also led to regular people creating niches that would've never existed otherwise

I'm trying to think what the equivalent of 2020s ug rappers is for the geriatrics in the thread
what kinda music was "out there" but they knew was awesome that the people 10 years older than them ridiculed to death
Like of course there's always been parents not getting their kids music, but I feel like the age gap where that occurs has shrunk over time
Now you can be listening to s*** that people within 5 years of your age would never ever even remotely be able to understand the appeal of
But this has also like always been a thing for every generation of music including rock/punk/metal/grunge/rap etc

I think there's this dividing line between people who grew up in an era before exponentially accelerating change and those who grew up after, and millennials kinda fell right on that line
The people born before fully resign themselves to enjoying simple, consistent, familiar things
People born after were forged in the fire of it, along with having their attention spans zapped, so they are able to keep up with it really well
People born right on the line are pulled in both directions. Generationally and culturally homeless. The perpetual fear of change that old people have, combined with the ravaged attention span of the kids
It’s true. They’re music for individuals who knows what it takes inside and outside of the bedroom.
