Basically the book centers around two main plot points. 1. The main characters mom dies and he takes care of her funeral arrangements. 2. The main character kills someone and gets put on trial.

During the trial, the lawyer basically entirely ignores the murder, and convinces the jury that the main character deserves death because “he didn’t cry at his moms funeral” and “he drank coffee at the funeral home”

They kept referring to the guy he killed as “the Arab” during the trial or whatever. Just to show how irrelevant they felt that part of it all was.

it's crazy they didn't kill him because he killed someone they had him killed because he didn't fit in the societal norm and was a "stranger" to society (didn't cry at the funeral/spend enough time sitting and feeling indifferences throughout his life) if he had shown fake regret and cried he prolly gets off but instead he was honest and true to himself and ironically is sentenced because of that

Exactly. It had nothing to do with the murder at all. It was his “personality”. Like completely arbitrary things that shouldn’t have had any impact. All of the witnesses were people that knew his mom and all they were asked about was his mom.

And not for nothing, he said he couldn’t afford to take care of her himself and still work and instead put her in a place where she would have friends and be happy. Which is like a pretty normal thing people do (though maybe not in Camus time, idk). But literally nobody cared about that aspect lmao
