Honest question for the pop fans here: do you think you need some level of controversy or edge to your public persona to be a pop mega star?
Dua is a pretty boring person seemingly which is fine I don’t mind it but the music seems to reflect a blandness that Gaga, doja, Madonna etc. don’t

wouldnt say controversy necessarily. it can help but there are also examples like Celine Dion or Adele. but its worth noting that those ones aren't necessarily aimed just at the younger demographic like your examples (and Dua) are supposed to be
im trying to think if some more people like MJ, Mariah, Taylor had it when they became superstars/megastars too and idk. m
that's my fave track on Dua's new album. smooth
Major standout.
These walls was meh
This my second illusion listen. I doubt it sticks. It’s not a bad song but it’s not a good pop song to my ears personally
Nothing about this couldn’t have just been on FN or a FN b side/ loosie
sounds like Hallucinate pt 2
i love it
fun bouncy dancepop slap catchy excellent radical optimism vibes
i usually clapback if theres falsehoods present within the clap
I've wondered why we stopped getting in longer arguments
I just started really saying factually mean things about you when you make me mad
I was gonna say maybe it’s a gender thing in response to this but then I remembered Taylor so idek
This dua album isn’t awful but there’s not a ton grabbing me which sparked the convo
i was gonna say post malone, but maybe there's something i'm forgetting lol
Hmm true. I think Gaga and Madonna relied a lot on shock controversy but it felt more organic without social media being what it is today (in the case of Gaga obvi Madonna is the template cause she did it with no social media)
When people do it now it feels completely manufactured
Madonna is the template for this whole kind of popstar within this convo
im free flowing convo left and right
Flop

Madonna is the template for popstar.

Does Dua lipa say
"I'm Dua lipa" on her new album
i dont recall

ironic
Ideally no because look at taylor, sure she has some "controversies" but it really is a whole nothing burger imo.
Dua seems boring cause she tends to be pretty quiet about her private life and she just does rich/hot girl stuff (and apparently also a podcast). The music just needs to be more interesting to make up for it.
wouldnt call it "edge" but Taylor's early country era still had an important aspect where the industry people looked down on her and she was presenting a certain perspective to a certain audience that hadnt been done the same way before
Do you think if she had that “edge” the music would be more interesting tho? Or does her music reflect just meh song writing?
Not sure. Maybe if she did add more of her personal experiences outside of her love life it could be more interesting. But Dua is here to deliver surface level fun bops and not something groundbreaking.
I enjoy the album and even if it does flop she can easily bounce back from it.
ironic
how bmass? my last album was the chronic
