Yep,but more acts had a chance. If you ever watched The Defiant Ones/the Dre-Iovine documentary. Iovine,when he and his partners started Interscope,they were looking for odd acts like Primus and Marilyn Manson,to see what they could come up with,if they had real money and a label backing them. Some of the execs were fans tbh,doesn't mean they weren't throwing s*** on the wall back then either.

Tho I suppose you could say Tik Tok/IG reels are the closest thing nowadays to that sorta monolithic MTV type platform. The difference is that your feed/fyp are gonna entirely dictated by your own tastes, rather than TV executives attempting to fit an amalgamation of different tastes/subcultures within the limited time frame of their programming block

They’re not dictated by your own tastes. They’re dictated by algorithms that are built to make you spend money. All these companies have world class psychologists working for them, it’s pretty nuts

If I like nothing but videos of Andrew Tate, my feed will be full of that
Regardless if it’s curated to make me spend money, it will be in a way thats designed to specifically make me wanna spend money

Which means they don't care about the music,the way artist come up now,its cheap for labels to watch you from the sidelines and try to snatch you on a deal after your inexpensive self marketing blows up.
Labels have always been about money first, it’s the music business after all
It’s just now they don’t have to worry about developing any artists, and have essentially skipped the middleman
Trust me the only reason UMG are mad at AI is because they didn’t get their hands on it first

It’s kind of another chicken or egg thing cause you won’t ever end up just liking videos of Shibas. They will build a profile around you just liking videos of Shibas and throw in videos that other people who like videos of Shibas also like and eventually everything you like is almost completely curated by them. And you won’t be able to tell if you would have organically ever liked these things if they weren’t subconsciously and systemically fed to you.
