The Taliban and ISIS are regional enemies who have ongoing internal conflict, so the reasons for the release are likely not to free them due to victory, but probably more due to judicial restructuring - the Taliban does not believe in western judicial law meaning they likely will either give all prisoners a new trial under Islamic law or simply release them w/o actual support due to intra-faith trust until they find them to have violated their own laws. It’s highly doubtful they’re simply freeing them with the intention of returning them given that many of these would have literally been their enemies themselves

Optics are terrible because we never should have been there in the first place for this long, and in reality it was going to look bad no matter what, because the entire operation was and always has been a failure built on lies and sunk cost. The alternative was essentially staying there forever, otherwise it was more a matter of which President was going to be the one to go through and look bad doing it, this was never going to be clean because the situation was and always been a disaster - our military and intelligence never actually planned for a pullout between basically 4 completely different administrations now.
