The only way I can see this being positive is if all the YB garbage dies and a new blog era movement pops up and takes over but I doubt that’s going to happen.
Hip hop might’ve been in a better state when it was more collaborative
Doesn’t help that there isn’t much variety in sound anymore so that when artists do collab it’d make for an interesting clash of styles
It was something that hadn't happened in 23 years. Followed by something that hasn't happened in 30 years. And now we're again in a thread for something that hasn't happened in 35 years. Almost as if there's a clear downturn trend here
I'm not denying a plateau, i'm just saying we're past that here clearly. You don't just stay stuck at the plateau level indefinitely
Just because it hadn’t happened in 23 years doesn’t mean that’s because it’s doing so bad tho hip hop had more profits in 2023 than it did 23 years ago it just means it’s the first time that thing happened in a while
U can attribute these to other things than hip hop dying man and it can be true it’s not the Pop powerhouse anymore while also still doing well
As I said yea genre dominance is levelling out in streaming, people are listening to more stuff, it’s a transition period, hence naturally hip hop won’t have as much of a #1 spot as it did before
It's strange because musically the genre is doing better than the last few years from what I've been enjoying. That's worth more than there being no new Drake slop on the charts right now
Genre lost goodwill with general audiences that it'll have to get back over the next few years with consistent higher quality output
Might be good for the genre to experience this honestly.
nah but seriously i dunno how to articulate it but i think this will have a positive effect
Only thing i can see as potentially a positive is less "fairweather fans" but i feel like if that also means less financial opportunities even for good art that could be a negative
There is a broader shift in everyones art and media consumption regardless that we just dont know how exactly itll end up yet though

i think the sound is more diverse than its ever been
keyword being sound

100%, the early 2010s is literally proof. So many classics
It’s kinda funny, all my favorite albums this year are hip hop. Earl, Cities Aviv, Rome Streetz, Teller Banks, Westside. Lot of good stuff this year.

“ Doesn’t help that there isn’t much variety in sound anymore”
This is the least true thing u can possibly say about modern hip hop honestly this is probably the most it’s ever been in history
Ill see yall in Central Cee sxn
cench is solid but i was alluding to the santan dave and little simz types

Does have a point tho, the sound of mainstream hip-hop essentially hasn’t evolved since 2016/17. All just ‘trap’.
This is the one thing that’s like undeniably not true ngl
We had the exact same number of high quality albums in other years along with the blockbuster slop albums and hits as well. I’d put almost any year from the last decade up against 2025 for quality albums for album
We probably need to welcome more diversity
Germany hasn’t done s*** since J Cole and Luciano
my cousins from germany always try to put me onto german rap after i said i liked the nemzzz and luciano song and its all ass

YB not even close to one of the negatives of modern hiphop
checked stats
Hiphop's share of the streaming market year over year
2016: 28%
2017: 30%
2018: 31.2%
2019: 30.7%
2020: 30.7%
2021: 29.8%
2022: 28.4%
2023: 27%
2024: 25.3%
Since 2016, R&B/Hip-Hop has consistently been the most-streamed genre in the U.S. and has frequently commanded around 30% of the total streaming market
According to nielson
The issue of charts must be a market diversification and label prioritization issue
YB not even close to one of the negatives of modern hiphop
lowkey, culturally especially for the young ppl hes carrying this s*** on his back i swear to god 😂 thats just how it feels to me

this is the exact same thing an outsider would say about hiphop as a whole

People can call it nostalgic all they want but there was a genuine excitement when artists used to rise together, feature on each others songs and do clique tracks. That was feeding into creating new stars and quickly learning about new artists
The veterans now who become popular with that happening are all fractured now (or outright beefing) and new acts often are finding their ground relatively alone. Its less collaborative and less of a family
Even with some of the variety now it serves more like different pockets of the genre that don't interact. Acts aren't building off each other in the same way

@americana maybe sound is the wrong word, more variety in subject matter more accurate?
cench is solid but i was alluding to the santan dave and little simz types
Word shoutout to them. went and listened to that raindance with dave and tems its fire
Cench still my favorite of anybody mentioned but im not well versed in UK hiphop/adjacent sub genres like that

also wrong!
