There was a lot of hype surrounding this before I listened. But did this album live up to the hype?
Yes.
Like Water For Chocolate is a soulful masterpiece mixing Commons poetic flows, Jay Dees swinging drums and jazzy contributions from Questlove and other members of The Soulquarians collective. More on this album than any other he’s released so far, he solidifies himself as a formidable MC and artist. There’s so many incredible songs to unpack, from the nasty “Dooinit”, from the uplifting “The Light” to the humorous “The Questions” to the heartfelt storytelling on “A Song For Assata”. There’s a certain energy you can hear in the music that I can only describe as magical. I would’ve paid a f***ing ton of money to be a fly on a wall during these sessions. I can’t find a single flaw with this album, and trust me I tried looking for something. No I.D and Common were a great duo, but Common branching out gave us this album. The world is truly a better place for having this available.

Gotta go through this whole thread now
My favorite common albums are: Be (of course), Finding Forever, and Dreamer/Believer
I think FF is mad underrated and can’t wait to read the review for that one the most I feel like.
These album summarizations are 👌

Thank You
I’ve enjoyed doing this with Common and I think I’m going to start doing this with more older discographies in the future.
did this with jay, the beatles, prince, MJ, john mayer, ye, drake, all on a road trip with some others. It is great to hear the changes in peoples music over the years and how they grow and evolve
always wanted to do this with common but was gonna ignore the common sense albums
At this point I usually do it for about 3-4 hours per day.
I usually get about 2-3 orders per hour. I weed out all the s***ty $2-3 orders that DoorDash likes to throw at you to get to the $5 and up orders.
You also gotta keep in mind the biggest factor to consider is also the mileage. For example, a $5 order for 1-2 miles is fine. That’s good money on your end. But a $5 order for 7-10 miles? F*** that.
holy s*** 5 dollars and up? i only pick up orders that are 15+
Let me preface this review by saying that while this album is definitely not perfect, I feel like it’s a misunderstood piece of work. People expecting something in a more soulful/jazzy vein are going to be surprised to hear Common dive into Psychedelic rock influences like Pink Floyd and Genesis. I think the majority of this album works well. However, there are a few moments throughout that either overstay its welcome or feel a touch awkward. Like the second half of “Jimmy Was a Rockstar”. But despite its few flaws, this feels like an inspired piece of work. The production from Questlove, J Dilla and The Neptune’s was excellent and the features are essential in supporting the experience. There are absolutely brilliant moments on this project. And it’s sad to me that the legacy of this album is that’s it’s viewed as a misstep between Like Water For Chocolate and Be because people’s idea of what Common is was challenged.
Final Score: 8/10

With common you can’t really ignore the common sense albums imo, that would mean starting on his 4th album I believe. They’ve all been retconned as just Common but even One Day It’ll All Make Sense was originally under Common Sense, starting with LWFC would be like missing his whole development. He just had to stop using the name but it’s not a situation where the common sense stuff is just his early stuff/not as important

Interesting the bridge on new wave is my favorite part of the album! Haha that’s funny how people can hear things so differently. Pretty nice review tho. 🤲🏽

One thing that I think gets slept on is you could argue that Electric Circus is the most unified effort from the Soulquarians. Most tracks are jointly produced by some combination of Dilla, Questlove, James Poyser, and bassist Pino Palladino, these 4 were really the musical core of the Soulquarians and this is the most that they all seemed to handle a project together like a true group and band as opposed to just a loose collective
On the credits I think you can see what they did for each track and some tracks for example it’s like Quest on drums, Poyser on keys and dilla on a bass synth which is pretty cool to me
I can understand quitting after Universal Mind Control lmao fortunately The Dreamer/The Believer was an excellent return to form for Common and also saw him linking back up with No ID. They made a very special album with that.
Only negative I have to say about The Dreamer is that cringey ass diss track smh

the soulquarians era didn’t last long nearly as long enough as it should’ve man
one of my favorite eras of music

You right for sure. The way he uses the features and producers definitely feels more like a Soulquarians album then a Common album. But since it’s still a Common album regardless, I’m going to review it as one.
glad you loved Like Water for Chocolate, thats easily my fav from him

It sucks how the general public reacted to this album.
I feel like “Love For Sale” by Bilal got shelved because the label did not like the reaction to Electric Circus.

Loved it? Nah I didn’t just love it. It’s probably in my top 20 albums I’ve ever heard. It floored me to the point I delayed my review so I could process it.

Looking back on the reaction to this album and common’s reaction to that reaction, for me it highlights how important singles, music videos, and artwork were in the pre digital era. It would appear that Common’s outfit in the Come Close video was really what doomed the reception of the album which is pretty wild to think about
Dilla also commented on the process of Electric Circus saying that the label was pushing them to make another “The Light”. Dilla wouldn’t do it so they got The Neptunes to do it. If they didn’t do that somewhat forced single attempt with Come Close (although a great song imo) and did a more organic rollout that matched with what the album was, who knows how the reception could’ve been different

yeah come close was a great single in general but not the best for that album because it didn’t represent the albums tone, character or direction at all
