Electric circus has Common, Erykah, Dilla, The Roots & The Neptunes crossing paths , setting a new tone for alt-rap it really doesn’t get anything close to the love it deserves
yea tbh it is supposed to age way better now than before. I could see more newer fans treating it as a 'soulquarians hidden gem' or something
Electric Circus is in my top 5 of all time. It was so ahead of it’s time. Incredible album.

It was an indie album a solid album 10 years ahead of its time
After finding his groove on his second LP, Common and No I.D continue to refine the music even further. This album is great. A overall moving experience. The jazz instrumentation on here mixed with the Hip Hop production was wonderful. My favorite track by far was “Retrospect For Life” with Ms. Lauryn Hill. The song moved me to the point that I started feeling tears well up in my eyes. The skits on here fit much better then they did on his last album. Interwoven within the narrative rather then just existing to fill up space. Only track I didn’t personally like was “Making A Name For Ourselves”. Common did fine on it, but I honestly find Canibus to be corny as hell and his contribution took away from the overall experience. But the albums strengths make this the best Common album I’ve heard yet. I will come back and listen to this album again.
Final Score: 8.5/10
Favorite Songs: Real N***a Quotes & Retrospect For Life
Least Favorite Songs: Making A Name For Ourselves
Underrated album
Today I’m going DoorDashing and listening to his 4th album
I’ll give you guys a short review when I’m done.
love this album
Your least favourite was making a name for ourselves
Canibus killed on that song

Obnoxious to me. I will never fw Canibus like that.

Canibus not gonna get love like that nowadays
Probably sounds like lyrical miracle s*** to a lot of people lol
At one point he was looked at like an alien though. Bruh was on another level compared to other rappers in the late 90s. Vocab/flow was different for that time

His solo career a flop but he was killing features in that era
Common even admitted he washed him
There was a lot of hype surrounding this before I listened. But did this album live up to the hype?
Yes.
Like Water For Chocolate is a soulful masterpiece mixing Commons poetic flows, Jay Dees swinging drums and jazzy contributions from Questlove and other members of The Soulquarians collective. More on this album than any other he’s released so far, he solidifies himself as a formidable MC and artist. There’s so many incredible songs to unpack, from the nasty “Dooinit”, from the uplifting “The Light” to the humorous “The Questions” to the heartfelt storytelling on “A Song For Assata”. There’s a certain energy you can hear in the music that I can only describe as magical. I would’ve paid a f***ing ton of money to be a fly on a wall during these sessions. I can’t find a single flaw with this album, and trust me I tried looking for something. No I.D and Common were a great duo, but Common branching out gave us this album. The world is truly a better place for having this available.

Those tracks are some of my favorites too. Also love the interludes sprinkled through the album. The album gets better for me then every time I listen, so layered and that soulquarians magic is so special. Something was in the air at Electric Lady studios when LWFC, Voodoo and Mama’s Gun were all made concurrently
Interested to see how OP feels about The Dreamer/The Believer. I still love that album.
Also OP I would recommend checking out the Cocaine 80s mixtapes. It's the group of Common, Jhene Aiko, James Fauntleroy and No ID. They made a lot of great projects in the early 2010s.
The Pursuit
Ghost Lady
Express OG
The Flower of Life
I I know you gotta ways to go until you get to The Dreamer/The Believer, but if you do enjoy that album checking out Cocaine 80s work is worth it as it gives you more opportunity to get a better understanding of Common's artistry in the 2010s, and they serve as a nice lead in to Nobody's Smiling.

I still haven’t heard that one, I’m gonna go through his whole catalogue soon too I’ve only heard up to Universal Mind Control

I can understand quitting after Universal Mind Control lmao fortunately The Dreamer/The Believer was an excellent return to form for Common and also saw him linking back up with No ID. They made a very special album with that.

I’m not going to quit until atleast after Let Love
I might listen to A Beautiful Revolution 1 & 2. Depending on how I feel.
