I’m 29 (hey fellow kids) and was put onto a lot of good music by Fantano in the 2010s like Injury Reserve, Death Grips, Brockhampton, etc but there’s part of rap nowadays that he’s just not in tune with at all. Says he doesn’t get Veeze, finally reviews Xaviersobased and gives a 5, hates on WLR and then spends the 2020s ignoring the artists that came out of that sound. He’s never reviewed Drakeo or Greedo but doubt he’d like them. And these are all essential artists that have pushed rap forward in the past 5 years.

With that in mind, he really missed the mark here unsurprisingly. Of course he’s caught up in the exhausting “authenticity/race” debate and has to frame everything he thinks about it through that. Even worse tho he said the production is some of the most uninspired rage beats he’s heard. Haaaarrrrdd disagree. The production on this album is out of this world, and does push the sound forward. I think this is a messy album with a lot of bold choices and the highs are really high. But everyone’s caught up in this narrative about age and realness and is scared that if they like Nettspend it’s like cringe or something. And I think that’s exactly why you haven’t seen a lot of publication try and review it yet. Like with WLR, I think they don’t know what to make of it, and are scared of missing the mark and panning an album that could potentially be considered a classic later.

Or maybe they just don’t like it I dunno

for some reason i start feeling so Unc when I bump this type of music

Nettspend is 18 or so, Osamason 23, it's like damn

    I'm the Uzi tweet

But I rock with some of it, and as a guy who makes beats every now & then, its cool to see what they come up with, what people gravitate to, and the energy the rappers come with

  • Who tf is u video is f***ing awesome

Eh I’m 26 and I love Osama and Che a lot, but Net never hits, maybe it’s cuz he’s white.

  • But also I don’t get why ppl put an age on music unless it’s literally like something for a kids cartoon or something.

I will say sometimes when I hear fengs lyrics, it sounds so highschool coded that it kinda makes me not interested in going back even when the music itself sounds good

I’ve seen other reviews also calling the production stale and recycled. I’m not fully into the rage/underground scene I only listen to a few artists in this lane but for people who know ball is this actually true? To me these beats sound innovative af. What other people or albums are they referring to that this one is biting?

it's because his contemporaries dropped albums earlier this year but i wouldn't call it "stale"... tbh after this tho its time to switch it up
