I just know I can’t rock this as sexy as Ye
dropping my review
first ep was amazing, felt like a perfect summary of his rise to being signed, so much amazing footage and foresight for later in his career/life, donda scenes broke me
second ep was good but felt like an extension of the first ep really, the studio footage was amazing for a hardcore ye fan but I could see someone not really into him finding it boring compared to the first. seeing songs I've heard for decades being made like that was amazing and that pharrell scene was so cool
third ep... man. don't know how I feel, that was a LOT to take in
donda death had me crying bad. my favourite part was probably the KSG trip, even though you could tell he was medicated heavy at the time I feel like he was in an amazing space creatively. JIK part was wholesome af too.
2020 tho... man. s*** was tough to watch. so tough. you can visibly see how much he's struggling. made me question some of the people around him at that time heavy. there were a few bits I don't think needed to be in there (tucker clip) and it feels like a really sad note to end on with the kind of redemption/recovery of the DONDA 2021 era
also like I get that it's not a doc about his entire career and he wasn't there filming during 808s-yeezus but that was arguably his artistic peak and one of the greatest runs in music history, why did they just show a montage of his controversies with supervillain music in the background
final thoughts: I love kanye, he has been through a lot and I hope he is in a better space now than he was during that summer
and he is still and always will be the GOAT

haven't got to the end yet but shame to hear they don't mention 2021. Would be nice for them to use a few clips to show Ye getting the hype back round his music and the GAP deal. This seems to be a much better place for him than 5 years ago, from a public perspective

they do show a little bit of the DONDA listening parties at the end, but I'm talking like 20 seconds of footage vs half an hour of the 2020 summer

the other cool aspect of the Donda listening parties is it's him doing something in the music industry that feels genuinely new. that's one thing I always really appreciated about his approach to live music from the very beginning of his career touring with John Legend & Miri-Ben-Ari all the way to selling out stadiums with Donda listening parties.
Plus it felt like his music actually found an exciting, focused vision again with Donda rather than just being a mesh of semi-decent ideas
I noticed the group that sang some parts of the doc and trailer worked w caroline shaw

Caroline Shaw if you remember from here
edit: it's actually that exact song used in the doc
Hmmmm
I’m glad we got the final episode (I’ll take any Kanye bts material)
But for the documentary itself, I feel like it should’ve been just the first 2 episodes
Would have easily won and Emmy/Oscar depending on how they submit
Final episode had some real beautiful moments but it felt so far removed from the first 2 episodes

Yeah you put into words exactly how i feel about the third episode
I love up from the Ashes. When the choir comes in
such a beautiful melody.
Also might be the only song they actually played CDQ in the doc. Wonder why they got the rights to this one in a way they don't seem to have for other songs
Facts, Idk why he was talking about his own career at all and showing his family towards the end of the second episode. "Kanye went on tour without me, so unfortunately I had to return to my own mediocre life" type s***
Feel like the third ep wasn't necessary and it should have just been a doc about his come up. The massive gap leaves out a massive part of story. If the massive hole in the story is missing why pick it up at the end to explain where the story is right now? instead should have just make it a doc on his come up.
Y’all think this will win any awards?
I don’t think so
If it was the just the first 2 parts they had a huge chance of getting an Emmy and maybe even an Oscar nom if they showed at as one film in the cinema like they did with the OJ doc
But the third part is gonna piss off the type of people who vote for that kinda stuff
I'm glad 'I feel like that' is officially canon in Kanye's lore, maybe it'll get released one day
It really is crazy that Kanye’s had some major controversy every other year since 2016
2016 - Breakdown on tour
2018 - Trump alignment / slavery comments
2020 - South Carolina
2022 - Kim divorce / IG rants / Pete drama
