That’s fair because I’m not sure if I’d consider the rehearsal or Nathan for you to be documentaries and both have elements shown in this but I’d still say it’s documenting a subject
idk this was weird
oh yeah its not bad that its not classified as a documentary its just some wanted it to run as best documentary so they could campaign for it to win and say it got snubbed if it didnt win. When its presentation of "truth' is different. its a documentary about documentaries in a way more than a subject itself. We only learn so much new about Elizabeth holmes. The brainrottedo n the internet think it went too easy on her and presents it as if she isnt guilty even as we see her go to prison. While many of us are like why not actually have more unique ways of her recognizing that even though she was found innocent of defrauding patients that was worse than defrauding investors which is what she is actually facing time for. Whether willfully or through sheer ignorance then trying to cover up once realized.
the point that she should let go of that power or attempting to coninue the brand and focus on her life.
glad you brought that up bc that last shot was brilliant for me i was more focused on the fact that i didn’t really know if it was her or her
Her or her?
It is a very gossip water cooler movie that lacks a level of substance even present in some nathan for you episodes. We begin the movie knowing she lies and deceives then she does so throughout the movie possible. While never truly facing what she did to patients and those ramifications who also have husbands and kids potentially. Which is to me what I thought was the central point of this going in. Instead she kind of becomes a punching bag for the audience that arent the patients to laugh at. As was the hulu show it appears to some degree. Making dramatization after dramatization of serious topics to laugh at the seriousness of them to cope with the dark reality and go "OMG THE LIAR POTENTIALLY LIED AND DECEIVED AND EW SAW IT LIVE WE CAN AGREE WE SEE IT IN THE ZOOMED IN SHOTS OF HER FACE " . Its filled with cool looking shots but its moments dont emotionally resonate or move to the degree many reviews would lead you to believe. To the point where you ask people the highlight of the movie. A joke about miscommunication of someone with the last name who?
The lady sleep deprived with two children with a baby daddy on cocaine who now is raising those kids alone . where I think the kids deserve money from milking the parents lives for content and awards||. Then at the climax you think || Nathan surely going to mention the insinuation of an abusive relationship, control, power of attorney and how its more than just tweets or money from a movie that filmed hundreds of hours of her life to dilute into a box office smash||. Instead it is race against time to || ask if she knew they potentially would receive a box office percentage of a chopped up bit presenting her like a liar . Starring a womans portrayal of her that made her cry recreating moments that she knows cant be recorded so she is possibly more open to being herself and trusting nathan. Only to be betrayed yet again for a chance at a best picture nominee for a movie that they now after release acknowledge isnt a documentary isnt real and contains actors
The audience went to this "documentary" wanting to s*** on , meme the subject like she is evil animal. she is a human being. Human beings lie and deceive. She partially did it for money , fame , accolades potentially but really again if you look at her interviews and everything she isnt even a person that appears like she was truly happy with the fame, accolades and money. nor does she truly appear happy now facing prison for touching that. If she wanted money fame accolades there were much better safer ways with an easier deceptive scale to do so if she was a manipulative genius people make her out to be.
So 3 hours later I am left realizing nathan and lance created a narrative to create a successful product just like she did. Obviously the gravity of deceiving patients and investors is worse than deception of presenting a human being that has caused destruction and emotional turmoil but its still deception.
it’s really nasty throughout, i heavily agree with you that he’s done way more intelligent stuff with NFY and the rehearsal.
when i rally think of this film, it feels like a dying posh establishment big DNC culture against a objectivist any rand silicon valley culture, more than anything ab truth and deceit. i have to tink it over more and wait for digital release to watch it again (refuse to pay to watch and sit in theaters for this)
i’m really mad that they made bully this aggressive animal like other thing. not that i empathize with the guy he’s obviously a wannabe billionaire tech ceo, but i feel like the movie does so much subtle posturing through nathan’s deadpan and its editing that’s undeserved because… i don’t really see how nathan and lance are inherently better people. as you say there two opportunists who are met with opportunity to make a movie they kinda know will go viral. the woman hasn’t spoke. to media in a decade.
i think if they kept this one in the vault, they could have had more important things to say. this sadly feels like it’s about… delivering a product and the posturing against this right wing ayn rand obsessed silicon valley guy seems really vapid when i don’t see how nathan and lance can defend their position of doing this film outside of the mere fact it will get a lot of eyes on it. very dissapointed with a24 greenlighting this, it really demanded a tighter edit
You cant say Nathan uses his talents to the full degree Yes some love Amanda Seyfried in all this but I cant help but feel if the budget used for her could be better used for more odd interactive ways like that. How people so clearly see Billy being hired and paid is a conflict of interest but PAYING THE ACTRESS WHO PLAYED HER IN THE HULU SHOW AND RUNNING THAT PERSON FOR ACTING AWARDS FOR A DOCUMENTARY ISNT IS BAFFLING. Astounding
i honestly think there’s an argument nathan and lance are as equal opportunists and grifters as billy is, and i thought that that’s the unravelling critics was raving about
they don’t really take anytime to explore their own role in this, and it’s a shame bc nathan’s other work does this so well
the little i’ve seen of the curse it kinda has the same problems, where nathan gets at the cusp of something really brilliant but kinda rides the fence on saying anything substantial.
i said in my letterbox review this movie has the artistic integrity of a howard stern interview and it really feels like this sentiment grows with time for me

I mean lets say Billy did not change his deal and his deal gave him not liz but him 25% of the box office that he didnt in anyway use for supporting her freedom or even properly raising the kids but used for cocaine and iguanas. They would still release this. They are opportunist focused on ADVANCING THEMSELVES. which would be fine if their hipster kino letterboxd audience also took that into account that they filmed hundreds of hours and this is what we get chopped up with no semblance of structure of a month countdown or days that it would have you lead to believe at the start. But the audience by the end is like why would Nathan lie to me outside of the crush they implanted him having on Elizabeth to imply she looks even worse and he is in some way protecting her. While Lance the good cop who didnt enter the prison or certain situations is being sure he isnt tempted by white medusa.
Making the climax a actor who profitted and was awarded for a performance that degraded elizabeth in misognyistic ways realizing the error of her ways when confronted by the people that say she got rich off putting her down. For her to turn against her further because she has to hear the truth. Amanda Seyfriend performance in this being hyped as amazing when the parts she is acting arent all that amazing is baffling. Its a movie where again the more I read of fan reactions the lower my score gets because they dont even get it to a large degree or how this film is hypocritical. Then combine that with having just seen digger and this movie having THE SAME EXACT CLAPPING CRYING F\*\*\* YOU AUDIENCE PARODIED IN DIGGER. Especially at the charlie kirk moment and the "he decided to not take profits "
in interviews they say a24 gave them full creative control but i’m like really?? i’m sure at some point some execs softly pushed them to deliver this, i don’t believe they just unleashed em with a budget and said we don’t care if you don’t have a movie

a24 execs def hit em with the tik tik esp once lance was finalizing primetime

i have to see digger bc i think if i come out of digger as a great movie, im just never listening to any critic again
media literacy is at an all time low
im more disgusted by the reviews of this film than the film itself. its honestly jsut ok but the reviews made me rereview it as a one star. its honestly kinda nasty when you think too hard on it
a24 execs def hit em with the tik tik esp once lance was finalizing primetime
and A24 going to make a killing off both and awards bait off both that make their studio look much better for the year
Tony
Backrooms
Drama
Invite
then you add in primetime and this
they have definitely had a year

@NobodyWins review in moments stay woke
Took this many years to chop this up
Sure but it’s not like they didn’t have tons and tons of other s*** going on.

with how much footage they filmed something feels missing from this movie
in so many ways
“How was it”
This made my top 5 this year. I think there’s some Nathan for you episodes I enjoyed more than this but this is his best project of work overall.
Having Amanda watch Elizabeth’s reaction to the show was so f\*\*\*ing good
Let out a short laugh when it panned to that WeWork building here in Austin, lord knows how many times I've driven by it
The shots of Cen Tex threw me for a loop
Had no idea she was in Bryan lmao

I don’t disrespect the take by any means, but especially after listening to some / reading some brief interviews from both Lance and Nathan, I get it. It sounds like even in the midst of filming in the beach house, there was a large chunk of it where they weren’t even sure if they had a documentary worth releasing. And Nathan was trying to stay behind the camera, until they sort of just allowed to project to morph into something else. I guess what I’m getting at is I basically trust their vision that they gave us the most interesting footage to align with the ultimate mission and thesis of the project (imo they were successful in delivering a thesis and hitting it home)
Now, my bias: I’m a massive fan of both artists work haha

But part of what I am getting at is they constructed the best narrative to make the most profitable product for a24
This looks creepy as s***
