as somebody who watched kevin’s career from 2011 til now

nothing about the rise of brockhampton was overnight or manufactured, it was just well executed.

the clancys managed him as a solo artist first and he dropped ambf under empire. that created a momentum that he rolled into saturation with.

they never pretended he didn’t have actual mentors and a team behind him, the clancys are among the best. but he was still indie and didn’t have a major label budget, hence why everything was created diy from the music to mixing to videos and marketing.

this is actually a pretty standard situation for most indie rap acts that blew in the blog era (great manager, deal with indie label / distributor, strong marketing)

still gotta mention it again but the fact that they dropped the ball on ameer with that in mind is wild to me. this should not have gone the way it did with the caliber of people they were associated with

it’s okay to just be a fan sometimes, it’s bizarre to see people who don’t follow the industry try to weaponize normal public info against artists lol

there are people who actually pretended to be indie when they had a major deal and even then idc to use it against them cause fans shouldn’t care in the first place. do you like the art or not!

you mean dropped the ball with how he exited the group? he left

or do you mean their response to the news when it came out?

I don't know man, I feel like having very close ties to a US senator and president who has been welcomed into the hip-hop culture (first Black president) will be able to get you into rooms with very good agents, managers, industry people in general.

Truthfully Chance being a plant never bothered me. It's the constant flex of "I'm independent! I did this all myself! I brought mixtapes back!" just came off as corny. Especially with how hard it is for artists really doing it on their own out here.

Oh yeah him doing it during coloring book was the worst lmao

It isnt the fans weaponizing but it’s acknowledging the fact a major label artist could masquerade as an indie while real independent artist struggle to get a budget, promote their music, figure out how to even just release music

    is kinda severely f***ed up

yeah both things. not being able to show the big picture and let bro leave over weak sauce bullshit that has nothing to do with getting money. dude left brockhampton to be a f***ing security guard. thats not even on him being stupid (at least not entirely) thats mismanagement. the entire momentum for the group got screwed. travis scott saw 12 people die and hes bigger than ever one could argue. they jus couldnt shut the all the way the f*** up and maybe do some dv fund donations???? guy has credits on eminem albums but cant handle ten f***head 20 year olds??

It was around January or February of 2012. I had started going to a ton of local gigs around Boston (where I'm from) to get involved in the culture. I had been going alone, no friends or anything. Now around October I had met this dude named "Da Corporation." He had worked with other Boston MCs like Young Bean and O.T.O. This dude was young and real cool, we became good homies. Now back to February. Corp had been contacted by Daniel Weisman (Wale's manager) or one of his representatives and asked to open for him at a show in New Haven. Corp asked if I wanted to join him. I really f***ed with Wale's music so I said yeah. Why not. Free show. My dude is performing.
Okay, flash to the show. We had been on a long ass road trip, we were hungry as hell. But we didn't have any time to grab anything. This one dude named David or Davion said the team (Wale and people) were going to go get food after and we could join them. I was like hell yeah. eatin dinner with Wale. That'll be sick.
Corp killed it. Got the crowd jumpin and everything. I was hyped. Wale came through later and I expected him to do something like say my friend did a good job or something but nah. He didn't say s*** he came out and started performing. I was like whatever and started jamming.
After the show. We follow that Davion dude to Wale's bus and ask where we're going. Then some white dude says that they're going to get pizza and to hang tight and that Wale is in the back we can chill. So we go to the back, say hey. He says nothing. My friend sits down next to him, I sit down across from him. Wale is just texting. I didn't want to be an a****** so my friend and I just started talking about random s*** like the trip or or comic books or how dope the show was (Wale couldn't hear us). Then my friend slides over and tries to dap Wale and talks about how much he loved Ambition and he was honored to perform. Now let me tell you this part is completely true. Wale looks up from his phone, stares my friend in the eye as he's speaking, then says "shut the f*** up" literally fifteen times in a row. My friend already shut up from the first one. Wale shakes his head like he's disgusted or something then looks back at his phone. My friend was in shock. He didn't expect that at all. He moved over to sit next to me instead so Wale was alone on the couch with a few girls and some dude we didn't know. We started talking again waiting for the food and Wale looks up and asks "you two know what shut the f*** up mean?" the girls start laughing and i make a "wtf" face. Wale shakes his head and laughs at me. Saying I look ed. And that my friend was a wack performer.
Corp didn't want to start s*** so he kept his head down and stayed quiet. I was pissed off. I asked Wale why he would invite Da Corporation if he didn't think he was good. Wale just shrugged and said he didn't even know about it. I was shaking my head and began whispering to Corp about how Wale was a b****. I think Wale noticed me talking s*** because he came over and started me in my eyes. Like he was gonna f***in kill me. He told us to get the f*** out and Corp managed to say that we were waiting for the pizza. Wale said "aint no pizza. get out"
So we did. We had no food and no place to stay so we just slept in Corp's cousin's car (he drove it up there) then drove back to Boston the next morning. He kinda stopped rapping after that and we don't talk much.
Basically, Wale is an a******. My friend was trying to give him props on an album Wale just told him to shut up. We didn't even do anything. Kinda sad really.
Everyone on KTT was asking me about it saying I'm just talking s***. I'm not. This is real s*** and I'm sure someone else who has met the dude can say the same thing.
    thanks for reading

If anything the bh situation punctures your argument in op in the first place.

so the argument for them being more 'authentic' than anyone else is actually the fact that the entire thing was allowed to fall apart so easily? like there was no prior financial incentive to maintain this group so they didnt care to keep it alive?

Because you’re using words like “alleges” and putting “indie” in quotations, as if they did something taboo or to downplay what they did

Essentially all successful independent artists are still getting help from significant industry players at some point in their rise

just wait till this guy hears about the strokes!

BH aint have enough money/connections to withstand an entire fanbase rolling with them hiding an abuser/someone who robbed a member.

It aint that no one “allowed” anything to happen. The ship was sinking and the repair the cracks wasnt worth the money.

Travis Scott is was on McDonalds my nigga. A couple dead bodies (that wasn’t even directly his fault) is NOT deterring that train.

chance's lane was really really contrived, and it overshadowed the music quite often. Pre Big Day the quality of the music was enough to help him retain his position, but uhhh we saw what happened when he couldn't keep that up
