Streaming has made everything less artistic. It’s not just music that has suffered—cinema is in hell, tv shows used to be incredible 90’s, 00s and early 10s. Now it’s maybe 1-2 memorable/culturally significant shows every 5 years.
—and they take 5 years to make 5 episodes
man shows used to be 20+ one hour episodes a season and then they’d slap you with a new 20+ show season in a year. Even sports have been greatly affected—music just moving downhill faster than the others. It feels the most soulless of all the arts rn. And it’s half streaming, half social media
There's no putting the toothpaste back in the tube. Tbh every major label artist who was selling albums should've unionized the second streaming was theorized but it's every man for themselves so now we are here
I’m not sure where contractual obligations lie with these streaming services, but if most major labels and independent artists got together and said “This is the only model we’ll accept and if you can’t accommodate that we won’t release music with you anymore”, you don’t think the services and therefore the consumer would kinda be forced to accept it?
Yeah but not in that way.
Albums should come out in physical only first then it comes on streaming after some time.
Some smaller artists are already doing this format
This makes sense but still harkens back too much to the older way of doing things.
I think a good mix of the old way and a modern way would be:
Digital-only release for the first week or so, but priced cheaper than the usual $9.99. There’s no physical product being sold, so there’s no reason it should be the same price as a physical CD. $4.99 is what I would consider a fair price
Second/third/fourth weeks is when the physical copies start rolling out. Vinyl, CD, cassette, all of it, and maybe each format has a different bonus track to incentivize the purchase
One month post-release is when it drops for free on streaming (if we wanna get really radical then we include a timed limit for all albums on streaming OR a timed limit on when their streams still count as new sales; I’m thinking somewhere between 3-5 years)
A method somewhat like this would work for everyone involved: the artist, the label, and the consumer. Everybody eats at different stages of the process

Tuesday physical release with a Friday streaming release so we can go back to harassing Target employees to leak s***
Nobody would pay for streaming if that was the format
$15 a month for the entire back catalog of music history and $1 a song / $15 an album for new releases you’re excited about and can’t wait for them to be free to stream?
I’d pay that

I’d pay that
I don't hate the idea for myself either but I feel like it'd turn streaming into a music enthusiast format. The masses really don't care about back catalogs like that. That's why Drake's discography is more valuable than multiple decades of music combined
I really just think it's on us to buy the music right now and buy the merch. Like you could pay for your streaming and pay $15 for the album right now on Apple
Have you ever had a Grapple? It’s an apple that tastes like a grape
It don't say that in the bible.
It don't say that in the bible.
I guess they got discontinued because nobody liked them. Didn’t taste good tbh
execs running this thread through chatgpt for ideas on more ways to take artists money and limit releases
A certain group of people..won't say what group...would never allow this
You're right, the Jews would never be okay with this.
Honestly no. I know this site has its gripes with streaming and although I agree with some takes I find it extremely beneficial to have access to virtually anything I want to listen to at my fingertips at a fixed cost
That’s because these people don’t know nothing about the user experience.
I’d rather open an app and immediately be able to listen to a song instead of having to purchase, download, and then listen. It’s too much work compared to streaming

That’s actually how I plan of releasing my projects, but I’ll still put it out digitally
I really think artists should put only their singles on streaming, then leave their albums in the iTunes Store or anywhere else, where they can purchase their albums on release day.
Depending on the art’s success, I would put the album on streaming after 1 year of its initial release.

Tbh, streaming companies already ruining the user experience.
Might as well load up good old Soulseek
In the sense that they’d be free at release, yes. But I think it’s necessary to allow people to still hear all the hottest releases (bc they’ve become so accustomed to that luxury) and then incentivize a purchase.
I more mean that there’s a few months where the only way you can watch/listen to something is to purchase it, and then it hits streaming free with your subscription.
but that doesn’t make sense
then, only huge fans get the “preview”, alienating anyone who would’ve listened at a later date
I swear an old KTT1 poster wrote up a waaay better streaming model than the current one & it had minimal change to overall royalties for major acts but it also made things more viable for smaller acts
Not sure if he's still on here, maybe Lyor Cohen sent the black trucks after him
Highly unlikely the industry would ever redo its whole self over like this to benefit artists
Have you ever had a Grapple? It’s an apple that tastes like a grape
Grape grape or tiktok grape?
Honestly no. I know this site has its gripes with streaming and although I agree with some takes I find it extremely beneficial to have access to virtually anything I want to listen to at my fingertips at a fixed cost
Even as an artist whose f***ed by streaming I still completely see the value as a fan
Its by far the best time Ive ever had consuming music

Sounds like the work of Safe
