Keep saying it
The death of monoculture makes it almost impossible to truly break new stars in entertainment. Most ppl thought it was talent that did it in the past, when really that was only a small piece of the pie. The stars you loved growing up were talented…but also it was easy to condition you into believing they were as such. There was a finite amount of ways to consume music and if you monopolized that, boom there’s your star.
There’s nothing to monopolize in 2023, and there in lies your issue. Also, because social media is what it is…the facade, the romanticism of the big time superstar musician is gone. The allure is gone.
It’s ‘easy’ to create a star when you can throw them on radio, on 106 and park, on TRL, and condition the masses into thinking this is the next star.
Much harder to condition an audience when everyone is watching one of thousands of streaming platforms and when they listen to music it’s via a playlist on one of a billion different dsp’s and that’s IF they’re listening to music and not a podcast
Facts
It may not even be possible to ever bring that back
Yes. This is what made past decades great. The ‘00s and ‘10s made crossing over jump the shark. Country, rap, Latin, and whatever the new “rock” will be should focus on being great by their own standards first
Agreed. Time to strip back and do a new take on the fundamentals

Hip hop is in a different issue. It needs to let go of toxic masculinity, even ironically.
Facts
It may not even be possible to ever bring that back
Yup.
It’s very much an issue that goes so far beyond just ‘talent’ or ‘superstar quality.’
The music and artists are there
The romanticism and allure is gone. And there are too many ways for people to spend their leisure time for a new true superstar to be a realist conception in 2023 and beyond
How is pop dying when the only active artists who can do stadiums rn are pop artists
Taylor
Beyoncé
The Weeknd
Ed Sheeran
(I forgot Bad Bunny)
Every single artist you named debuted more than a decade ago.
Established artists selling out stadiums is not what the article is about at all. And neither the Weeknd or Ed Sheeran are from the U.S.
The article is talking about newer Pop artists blowing up and dominating the music scene and that's happening at a much slower pace than previous decades for Pop acts.
Bad Bunny isn't a Pop artist either. He's a Latin rapper. In fact, Bad Bunny's dominance proves my point on how American Pop is on decline since the dude doesn't even make songs in English.
The U.S. pop industry is losing out to non-American acts from Latin America, South Korea, etc. and that's becoming more true everyday.
Pop as a global genre will always be popular but U.S. Pop as we know it is on life support.
I'm 22 and have been following music blogs since 2007, literally seen all the current hot artists come up from being nothing
You got nearly a decade listening to and covering this music s***? You ever had a twitter account with thousands of followers because of you sharing your two cents on music? You get reached out to by heads at Universal when you were 19, asking if you would be interested in helping them find new artists?
