It’s not insulting to explain why something is the way it is though. They don’t exist separate of each other, they work hand in hand.

sure, but it’s a bit reductive to say that people prefer Trilogy because of X study and psychology, versus it being a phenomenal project, it can both be a phenomenal project and a product of nostalgia at the same time

But there are still scientific explanations for why our brains are wired the way they are.

sure but that has nothing to do with blanket statements regarding someone’s preference for the weeknd’s older work

those studies aren’t really worth much when there’s examples of people growing out of music from their adolescent years and literally preferring newer s*** that they have found

    look at Lorde

Yeah my experience growing up in the blog era, my most nostalgic music is C3 leaks and stuff but I don’t just sit around listening to the music I did back then, most of it has actually gotten a little more boring to me. I still enjoy the novelty of hearing new music even though I feel out of touch with the youth sometimes. Like I’d rather hear an album I haven’t heard from the 2000s than something i grew up with and overplayed generally

Our relationship with music has probably changed since that study was done tbh. I’m nostalgic but I don’t think my generation is strictly listening to their old music in the same way that generations before would

because art is an intuitional, subjective endeavor, versus a series of processes and mechanics in the brain that produces a certain effect

and it’s inextricably qualitative, to try to explain it off with “well your brain was still developing at X age, that’s why you like it so much” is just disgusting and materialistic

You’re being really hyperbolic lol there’s nothing “disgusting” about offering a scientific reason why our brains do the things it does.

It doesn’t take away from the subjectivity of art and what you personally like, only offers an insight as to why you might like that.

Trilogy is definitely a phenomenal work, I never denied that

I heard Mr Morale was the most streamed hip hop album of the year. This true?

Exactly, the brain is what allows us to appreciate art in the first place, so saying that it’s insulting to explain its processes is kinda crazy

You don’t choose to prefer the art from your adolescent years. That’s innate

You don’t choose to prefer literally anything. Preference in music isn’t a choice. It’s determined from where you’re born and what your upbringing and exposure to music is like

Nah, @dedication might actually be the most b**** made poster on this entire site Been trying to start s*** since yesterday by taking away from Kendrick's achievement and now he's talking about "gaslighting" in here

Who even tries to take away from an artist's global numbers by bringing up numbers in America only, that makes no sense

exactly especially with how much easier it has become to find new music in general too

i don’t doubt that there’s people out there who genuinely hate any and all new music that’s out and about, but at least on a music forum (where i’d personally guess that people are more passionate than the average person about music) i wouldn’t really stake my claim that people are just sitting around and listening to old s*** literally all day

anecdotes aren’t worth much but i literally went from predominantly listening to hip hop music and stuff when i was in high school, to listening to R&B, pop and rock music

things change and develop all the time
