Smacked VoodooDudes like Pharrell (Neptunes if you wanna be obnoxious about it) and Timbaland defined a whole sound that was dominant in music (not just rap/hip-hop) for two decades. A sound that is actually still prevalent and replicated today in Hip-Hop, R&B, Pop, and even Latin and Dancehall music today because of the hits they made and artists they've worked with back in the day.
Kanye's production is great (or was), but there's a particular range of sounds that Pharrell got that Kanye never really did. People will be like "Well Kanye can do house/dance, gospel, and experimental!" and I'll just be confused as if Pharrell hasn't also nailed these sounds in many different eras of his career.
Ultimately it comes down to preference as to who you like more. But when speaking objectively, it's extremely obvious that Pharrell is the better producer.

I do think Kanye is in that top 10 greatest producers of all time, and that’s what enhances his case for greatest artist of all time to me because he has done incredible things as both a producer and recording artist. But when strictly speaking about producing I felt like it’d be disrespectful to have him up there with the guys who dedicated their entire careers to just producing

I don’t know why I got tagged lol. I said Chad Hugo erasure sucks, which it does and it is a real thing. Partly because of him being a huge introvert.
Anyways lol, I’ve praised Pharrell throughout the thread. Even posted videos of him making music from scratch. I just don’t think Pharrell as a standalone producer with no mention of Chad is fair. Their run together was unprecedented.

I am happy Chad has some involvement on “Let The Smokers Shine the Coupes”. I just like seeing him in the picture too. Partly nostalgia for me. I hope he has a little bit of involvement on Let God Sort ‘Em Out. I doubt he does given the dynamic now. I heard he was mentioned a good amount in that Lego movie too but haven’t watched it.

Def check it out, it's an amazing watch. Should’ve been a Netflix premiere tho.
Maybe it'll become huge as soon a Nickelodeon picks it up for like a random movie premiere.

As for the Neptunes run, I mean they controlled music for like 5 years and literally owned the charts in R&B, Hip-Hop, and Pop. It’s not at all crazy to view their production run as the greatest ever especially stemming out of hip-hop and R&B.
Chad actually had a lot of funny persona back in the day too that made him super cool whenever he’d pop into interviews or documentaries. I feel like he retreated from that a bit. HHNF is all Pharrell for example, so calling him a hack is wild to me. Lord Willin’ you hear a lot of what Chad brings to them as a duo.

Last clarifying point lol, just so I’m clear, it’s funny to take someone 25+ years into their career (which is case for both Pharrell and Kanye) and say the past ___ years are the reason they are not that good. Judge them for their peaks and prime. It’s like saying Michael Jordan was a bum because of his wizards run. Musicians have primes too.
