That Holiday Special was annoying to me, but it feels weird to trash. The best thing I can say about it is that the stupidity of the characters, and the plot, reminded me of a cartoon Christmas special. Which… is nostalgic, I get that, but do we really want that? We want Drax and Mantis to behave like actual cartoons?

Oh my goodness No Way Home is better than I thought. The internet is a bunch of a******s for throwing it in the “great first theater experience but mid looking back” bin. Some character decision making logic flaws in the first act for sure, but there’s some real peak MCU in there that I didn’t even realize was peak MCU until last night. I could write an entire thesis on that s*** tbh

• best ending in an MCU film
• best character arc and development in a single MCU film
• completes arguably the best character arc throughout the entire MCU (arguably but only because it’s rivaled by Tony Stark…and Tony Stark only)
• greatest payoff moment in MCU history (yes better than Endgame’s goat payoff moments)
• some of the most touching and meaningful character and thematic work in an MCU film

I stand by it not being the best Spider-Man film but I WASNT NICE ENOUGH TO IT it’s also an insult to great writing and character work to say any film other than it is the best Phase 4 film

The Greatest Payoff in the MCU

Some would look at the title and have any big moment from the third act of Endgame spring to mind. While the film is chock full of perfectly satisfying payoffs built upon a decade of setups, I wager the single greatest payoff in the MCU is in a moment from another film…

When Tobey’s Peter stops Tom’s Peter from killing Norman Osborn, several narrative threads throughout years of two different franchises are brought together and receive a meaningful payoff:

Tobey’s Peter finally gets to save his once surrogate father from being killed by the same glider that killed him in the past. It is a satisfying moment for Tobey’s Peter, a powerful moral message in its irony of a hero saving his enemy, and it’s clever because of the use of the glider - which was used to kill Tobey’s Peter in the event it killed Norman originally.

In another, more subtle way, it’s Tobey’s Peter being able to “go back in time” to his younger self and prevent himself from giving into the hateful vengeance that spurred him into hunting down - and inadvertently killing - the man who killed his Uncle Ben. He gives a version of himself a chance to be better than vengeance

Tom’s Peter and Tobey’s Peter share an unspoken understanding of what being Spider-Man means. That understanding is a communication of personal sacrifice. Through a simple look between the two Peters - and great bits of acting from Tobey and Tom - we see a wise Peter bestow decades of experience unto a younger Peter without needing to say a word. Tom Peter is about to make an irreversible decision, and while it is a justifiable one, it would do nothing to heal the pain caused by the man he is about to kill.

Being Spider-Man means you can’t do the easy thing. Even if that means killing the man who just took the life of the person who raised you and cared for you your entire life. And upon resistance to being stopped, Tom’s Peter finally stops as he realizes he is doing the wrong thing because he also understands that stopping is what being Spider-Man means. By sparing his enemy, Aunt May’s mission statement to Peter is fulfilled and good can win.

20 years of history culminating in a strong moral message, driven home through shared pain and principles as a poignant display of being the bigger person. Powerful stuff
