i heard bjj isnt really that useful since its mostly on the ground. i dont know if thats true but thesis was that when in an actual threat you wont be really fighting and using your skilsl on the floor like that making krav maga more effective

Keep researching brother, not trying to be disrespectful but what you’re saying is like saying lil pump is better than Kanye, if that makes any sense.

BJJ / wrestling are the most effective grappling arts and in turn are the most effective martial arts. If you know how to grapple and your opponent doesn’t, it’s like playing video games against your grandparents. I’m 5’10 160lbs and not even that good of a grappler and I can control / submit enormous strong men who are trying their best

Krav Maga can work but I’ve seen a lot of those guys come into my gym and get their ass kicked lmao. It’s not a lot of regulation in the schools for authenticity. I can start a Krav Maga school now and nothing could really stop me from pushing BS.
Jiu jitsu is good for at least understanding grappling concepts and being able to go through positions and have a general awareness on the ground that most people don’t have. Most fights end on the ground somehow, you’re better off knowing where you are and what to do to reverse positions which it’s good for.

Look into the knees over toes program. It's helped a lot of people with knee pains that I personally know.
Also try Krav Maga but in all honesty you're better off joining an mma gym unless you actively want to train groin attacks lmao

    interesting.

so what type of martial arts would you recommend if i just want to be prepared for the common dangers in the streets. you know, somebody trying to hit you and you having to defend or you having to attack first to deescalate

Probably Judo. You hip toss someone onto concrete and there not getting up. Other than that boxing/kickboxing can be really useful especially to avoid getting hit.

Anyone ever train at a 10th planet gym before. I'm about to move and the closest gym to me is a 10p gym.

boxing is the #1 all-round self defense martial art

you dont want to be rolling around on concrete in jeans in the dark getting cut up by shards of glass and having your head stomped in by the attackers goons

box to learn the fundamentals of how to guard, how to control distance, how to throw your punches, how to move your head and torso and feet so that when you throw the punch you are protected at the same time and still peripherally aware and never off balance or likely to stumble etc

learning how to defend a kick, break out of a clinch and otherwise basic grappling would only add to your game of course but in terms of having to pick just one martial art? its boxing.

with that said the best self defense is probably just to run away bro

im thinking about doing two things at once. one boxing and one some more advanced s*** like defending a kick, breaking out of a clinch and basic grappling. what martial arts would be best for that?

Honestly man just go to an MMA gym and try out the different classes, it will be cheaper overall and you can eventually just show up to the ones you find enjoyable.

kick+clinch work+grappling... the closest you will get is Muay Thai but you won't really get any grappling in that at all

I see you're very focused on the self defense aspect though. Some gyms teach with that stuff in mind, i'd say most reputable ones don't (because they focus on competition/sport) but what you learn will be applicable to the majority of the population

The thing with self-defense oriented gyms is that they can lull you into a false sense of security and confidence when all your fundamentals are terrible
