i am looking to get into muay thai. i go to the gym and train strength and am slim and muscular so i dont see physicality being an issue. id like to do a form of exercise which isn’t just pure vanity
plus i’m quite pretty and i live in a city with socioeconomic problems so want to learn a mode of self defense.
any tips from practitioners ?
U just gotta go and find a gym with a vibe you like otherwise youll hate it in the long term
And introduce yourself to ppl early, easy way to partner up and bounce questions off each other in the future
Found the perfect muay thai gym. Skills have improved so quickly in the last few months. Praise be to the most high
Any suggestions on a martial arts to try out?
I tried jiu jitsu and it's not really for me.
I was thinking Judo or something else. I just want something that has rhythm

Nah judo is very short term explosive, are u mainly looking to grapple? Boxing is very rhythm focused

Tbh, not sure. I want to find some form of martial arts that I love. Thought it would be jiu jitsu, but that didn't work out.
Boxing has always interested me (was a Tyson and Holyfield fan growing up), but I want to protect my head lol.

Why didn't Jiu-Jitsu work out? It's the best

plenty of people do boxing or muay thai without sparring. if it’s a decent gym then they shouldn’t have any issue with you just wanting to do bag and pad work

Yeah there was no problem at my gym when I got sick of all the brain rattling hits to the head and shifted to strictly ground game
I joined a boxing gym/team in college cuz one of my Econ professors was the coach and he was cool af. I got a bad grade on an exam cuz I was f***ing about and sparred with him to get my getback and he beat the brakes off me I left and never saw him again
Shoutout professor Corey

What do you mean by rhythm? Capoeira might be what you want

I've tried gi and no-gi BJJ. I just got frustrated with learning and wasn't consistent with it.
Not saying I should be able to pick it up quickly, but I wasn't getting any of the moves down at all after 6 months

Idk how to explain it, but running and cycling have a sort of rhythm to them that I enjoy.
Trying to find that same feeling in other sports (particularly martial arts).
Is Capoeira commonly taught? I always just see BJJ around the cities I've lived in

I barely got a newbie into a submission
I'd like to get good at some form of martial arts. Just don't know which one suits me

Jui Jitsu is one you can do till you're 70. Highly recommend.

Maybe I'll give it another try at some point. It's also mad expensive for where I'm at ($200/mo).
Rock climbing is about $90/mo and I need to make some friends anyway

Nah I def feel you
At my gym the new ppl n advanced all did sessions together so the learning curve was tough
I was a pro at the simple submissions but I felt like I was using strength more to my advantage than technique during rolls, did no gi and gi; I liked no gi better but jiu jitsu wasn’t my thing
Mauy Thai was iight though. You should try that

Capoeira is more niche as it's dance based so it might be a bit harder to find training depending on where you live. Muay Thai does have rhythm in it's own way as well.
Oddly enough Fencing might have the kind of rhythm you're looking for. This channel has a lot of cool stuff on it, it's very fast paced but when he's breaking down techniques or point scoring you can see the back and forth of it: youtube.com/@SlicerSabre
