I don't think it is. We've just had a s*** season so far.

If Ten Hag has set his sights lower this season as a result, or if he set them lower prior to the season starting, then by all means sack him. But I don't think that's the case.

I did expect this season to be smooth sailing, but as soon as all hell broke lose i accepted the obvious signs that were all there. I do think ETH will always want to win and go for top 4 or top 2. But as a fan i think you need to be realistic.

Not losing and replacing McTomminay and Maguire are just one sign of the poor state of the club. Casemiro not being a longterm solution nor a ball carrier is a worry.

Old players stinking up the dressing room of which we atleast have proof in Sancho but i suspect others (standing by him).

I don't believe there's enough fast paced, technical players in this squad to get anywhere near the efficiency of a Tottenham or Newcastle let alone a City. Transition play seems like a remedy solution to be able to compete with them in the case of a good run of luck and proper finishing after winning the ball high up the pitch, but it's not the type of play most United fans are demanding Erik plays.

So yeah, a rebuild over a couple transfer windows (with hopefully a better DOF and better finances) is the safest way to let the phoenix arise from its ashes.

Casemiro was class last year. Should never have been any question marks around his ability this season. Either he has so rapidly fallen off, or he's not being adequately supported in midfield. I tend to believe the latter. Ten Hag's envisioned the Mount-Bruno-Casemiro midfield but not actually executed it successfully so far.

Can't replace all players in one go. Offer for McTom and Maguire wasn't deemed enough, or they didn't want to leave, or club felt they didn't have enough time/funds to get in quality replacements. Ironically they've both been highlights this season so far.

We should be doing a lot better than we are. Should be playing a lot better football. Remedies required or no remedies. These lot are better than this and so is Ten Hag.

We've had moments, fleeting as a whole, but moments nonetheless, were we have actually executed some quality football. There's just this hesitancy to fully commit to it, or a belief we can't sustain it. Maybe we can't. But you also can't sustain hanging on by the skin of your teeth game after game.

I had brought up the EFL game against Palace (weakened team yes but still) recently as a weird outlier where we played amazing total-football-esque stuff (first half especially). There's no way they just went out and randomly did that.

So it clearly must still be somewhere in the back of Ten Hag's mind, he just hasn't seemed willing to commit to it, annoyingly enough.

I concede many of your points, in fact i also believe it to be true that Casemiro was class and Ten Hag expected it to work with Bruno-Mount-Casemiro. BUT, Casemiro as a profile is in no way a match for his initial ask for a De Jong.

Missing that ball carrier changes a lot of the style of play already.

Yes McTomminay and Maguire have raised their levels compared to previous season but no they are not a piece of the longterm puzzle.

And yes you are right in that United can do a whole lot more with what they have. The main problem being a lack of team spirit and passion/cohesion. Yes Ten Hag can and will do better this season and i won't be surprised if they take a top flight into a comfortable top 4 position this year, but i STILL don't think that's really the big achievement we think it is.

Even if you miraculously manage to get a 2nd place (which is an improvement against previous year), it would still not convince me that the current squad is something worth preserving or using as a foundation for following seasons.

So in conclusion, if you know that the squad is fundamentally asked to overperform in both results and quality of football then i see no other solution then to wipe the slate clean and only ask them to focus on results (hopefully aided by a good run of luck) while not obsessing over seeing "ETH ball".

On Casemiro's signing, I have no reason to believe Ten Hag didn't want him - we've always had it reiterated that every United manager has a transfer veto.

In addition, it's been said that transfer was pretty much in the works for a while. Casemiro had told Madrid he wanted another challenge and communicated that to United back in June or so supposedly.

De Jong is what it is. We wanted him, he didn't want to move. Ten Hag didn't see a capable plan B of that exact profile. Eriksen was used as the makeshift piece, and successfully at least until his injury.

I've assumed Mount was viewed as that ball carrier type.

The majority of this current squad has now been moulded by Ten Hag. Of course players will leave and players will be bought. But rebuild is big talk. They should have come into this season better, ready to execute more positive football. Those foundations have somewhere in the nooks of their brains been laid, because we have seen it, I think there just needs to be a concerted effort to commit to it. Yes, survival mode/grind out wins is necessary at points, but it's no guarantee and unsustainable.
