Yeah but that doesn't mean he's infallible.
When I listen to artist I love I need to feel like the mixing is wayyy better than what I could do, I need to feel like the production is way better than what I could do. Rapping and writing wise I'll NEVER be anywhere close to Lu but the other two aspecting mixing and production I don't feel that way.
I didn't get want I wanted out of it, what I want out of a project as a person that makes music is different from what a person who doesn't make music wants out of a project. I'm approach it with a different perspective, needs and curiosity.
I want to look up to the ones I grew up listening to, not feel that the gap is getting smaller.
I'm not a mixing snob either, Charles Hamilton has HORRIBLE mixing and I love his old music. I just don't like LUPE with this style of mixing. Majority of his career has been a certain style of commercial mixing, its not easy for me to transition to this type from him.
Either way chalk it up to personal taste I guess.
I feel like an album like Off Season is the worst offender for this. Coles vocals strangely were on top and the beats just lacked texture and felt way in the back, s*** the album didn’t bump at all. Almost ruined the album for me ngl
Do any of yall miss Lupe rapping more on some street s*** sometimes? I was listening to Revenge of the nerds a while back and I'm not gon lie. Sometimes I do miss the double and triple entendres about the d*** game and s*** lol. It's entertaining. He was good at that. Songs like Theme Music To A Drive By, Pills, Handcuffs, Steady Mobbin, etc
Love this album but I was thinking he was gonna be rapping about crack pipes on the ground on some Nas s*** since he was comparing it illmatic lol.
But then again he did compare Drogas Wave to illmatic.
I just know lupe could make the ultimate street album if he wanted to but it seems like he intentionally avoid those kind of songs now.

I think it’s really about him maturing and not wanting to go back to those subject matter, esp with what happened to Chill

makes sense

I'ma be honest with you, I can't even remember what that project sound like. I listened to it once...maybe twice. I like Cole, he's cool but that's by far my least listened to Cole project. I remember half of it just being like mixtape-esc verses/freestyles.
I want an ALBUM of fully fleshed out songs not just a bunch of rapping and bars. I know that's the concept of the project but we already know you can still rap you been killing features, when it's album time you gotta give us more.

Yeah but even when he was rapping about that stuff it wasn't in a way where he was glorying it (except for a few Arista era tracks)
To me it always came across as social commentary and reporting on stuff in his environment
I put it all on the table
I have my reservations
so simple but so dope at the same time

I definitely miss street Lupe. He kinda did it on some of the songs on the cool, but I remember him saying he had to go to a dark place while doing some of those songs

Hustlaz is one of my all time faves, but no, not really. He has so much street content already out there and it's still not everything. You can make at least a triple disc without even touching Fahrenheit or the F&L leak.
Incredible a***ysis of the album imo

Tbh I thought low key the album would have more street Lu as the freestyles before the album came out was more in that vein and him calling it his Illmatic.
I was not disappointed we didn't get that as the album is great.
But I would still like to see him do that hood commentary flow album.
But I think Lupe finds that kinda topic too mainstream and only a small part of his world view
Album kinda trash compared to his last one really wanted this to be better than mid steppers but nah Kendrick outdid bruh this time around
