It was one of the first albums I bought as a kid, it is not timeless lol. You don’t hear it brought up anywhere other than forums of Wayne fans trying to claim it’s classic. When is the last time you heard it outside
i havent Prince - Purple Rain outside never in my life
by ur logic that isnt a classic album i understand
none of the albums u listed fit any criteria of being a classic
Not gonna debate GNX, the numbers are undeniable, coming off the craziest year for a rapper, reincarnated & the energy of the album are classic
Every single song on that Vince album is the essence of hip hop you just have terrible taste
So Yall can play Lights Out, The Block Is Hot, 500 Degreez, IANAHB, IANAHB2, FWA, C4, C5, Funeral, Rebirth and say “yeah this stuff is just as good as the first 3 carters”?
Is nasir, magic series, kings disease etc as good as illmatic?

No
Dumb argument
Nas also has a wildly inconsistent discog

Talking about numbers when C3 is almost diamond. okay.

I just realized this post is about carter 2 excuse me WHAT
Some people prefer carter 2 to carter 3 dawg. Actually a lot of ppl
People who think mixtapes are somehow less than albums are clueless (and probably racist) losers who don’t understand how hip hop in particular works, or music as a whole for that matter.
It’s a really dog s***, cynical, and ahistorical way of looking at music in general. The same thing that mixtapes do has largely been the format for a large part of music history. Offering a new take on an already existing song isn’t lazy or uninventive. In fact this is largely how music progressed and new sounds were discovered for centuries going back to spirituals and folk songs. Even amongst modern music, whether that be the Great American Song Book, the way jazz takes songs and reinvents them hundreds of times over in new ways, or even just the simple act of sampling and interpolation which is practiced across genres
Charles Mingus for example would re-record his own compositions multiple times in radically different ways under different titles. He consider his compositions to be “living documents” that could be reinterpreted and built upon forever. Someone doing this with someone else’s original composition is no less legitimate.
But when it comes to rap specifically, discounting mixtapes as being lesser than albums is an insanely white take and extremely disrespectful to a culture which has always had mixtapes as a centerpiece.
True although some artists it’s valid not to count their mixtapes but someone like Wayne yea cmon lol
We talking about albums, original creations.
The fact that people can’t defend the albums and immediately jump to mixtapes to defend Wayne is the biggest tell that this take isn’t too off the mark.
BECAUSE HES KNOWN FOR HIS INSANE MIXTAPE RUN HELLO??
Love how people are stuck on the whole “bbbbut what about the mixtapes” as if the thread doesn’t soecifically ask albums

Because mixtapes shouldn't be excluded when talking discography

I do aswell, but it’s still not a classic. It is clearly not in the same league as the pillars of the genre. C2 could have never came out and nothing would be different. That was right before Wayne hit his streak and found his style. Fact is Wayne wasted his prime on just going in the booth and spitting over whatever and letting others make his projects for him

It’s really not that deep
In previous eras, how good you rap was #1, not how cohesive your albums were
Was it Kanye that made people care more about albums as a piece of art over how good of a rapper one is when determining... well, how good of a rapper one is?
Most of no ceilings is cleared and on streaming so most of the arguments for it not counting don't really work.

yes. they used 50 vs Kanye to boost consumerism in rap
Lame ass take
Its not even close to being in the same league as the pillars of the genre.

That is NOT true dawg C2 was also super successful it debuted #2 in the country and was super critically acclaimed
it was the first time anyone heard curren$y and it’s a super beloved album and it’s the first album to make Wayne known for just being an amazing rapper and seperate him from mannie fresh hot boys sound
The money on my mind beat is classic Fireman was such a hit, carter 3 was more of the commercial giant victory lap album

I can. Block is Hot, 500 Degreez, IANAHB2, C4, and Funeral are all better than Carter 3. Some are even better than Carter 2!!
