So, I picked JID as the example since number of hip-hop fans have been crowning The Forever Story as rap AOTY and even hearing some claim the album as ATL’s GKMC/F&L. Personally, I think the album has excellent production, the guests brought their A-game, and admittedly as someone who doesn’t like new rap, it’s a very enjoyable album.

Despite its redeeming characteristics, I can’t help but think…JID wasn’t rapping about much, THAT or the subject/story was noticeable regurgitated throughout multiple songs. For that reason ALONE, it didn’t make it as 2022 AOTY. Like @krishna_bound pointed out several times in the past, this problem extends to other rappers such as Ab-soul and Kendrick. Many of the rappers I enjoy periodically like Nipsey, Curren$y, T.I, Problem, RaRa, etc. hardly divert away from their usual subject matter. Difference is, they don’t come off as “try hard” and people don’t herald them as profound lyricists, unlike JID or Kendrick.

Kendrick, like frank ocean, uses production gimmicks to make it seem like his lyrics are deeper than they really are. For example, changing the pitch of his voice and putting skits of people talking in his songs 💩

when it comes to Kendrick I simply don’t agree. He’s been known to be a very potent songwriter & concept artist his whole career

He’s one of the few artist that blew up off raw talent & NOT from gimmicks
