Sustaining the pinnacles of greatness at any level, in any profession is extremely hard.
I think it’s Drake’s refusal to respect the art form of the album format
Let’s be clear this nigga Drake makes incredible music. That much isn’t debatable imo. Like $$$4u is full of sweepingly beautiful s*** and he’s had moments of lyrical excellence rap wise all decade. But he just doesn’t seem to care about making projects that are more than the sum of their parts. More than just a playlist of great songs. He’ll stumble upon something cohesive every now and then like in the case of $$$4u but then he’ll pepper the tracklist with s*** that completely kills the vibe the album is creating like Meet Your Padre. S*** has no business around the rest of those songs lol. A mf who respected crafted albums would never do that. If this mf had an ounce of restraint he’d have 10 perfect albums already
1000%
Look into the platform dreaming Spanish / the concept of input
In a year and a half I went from no sabo to being able to watch native level podcasts and tv shows. I can understand Spanish I hear in movies or irl for the most part.
this is exactly what I want. I’ll double that with my Duolingo if that makes sense
I don’t expect him to sustain that 13-15 greatness but he should at least be able to have more good songs than bad songs on an album
Drake is still making the best music now, melodically and general execution! He is way more refined as an artist!

It’s why his best album is the one where 40 basically forced him to lock in and make a cohesive & concise project.
It’s funny that Drake said maybe he’s Prince and Kendrick is actually Mike because when you look at their approach to album making it kinda fits.
MJ would take years in between albums and come back each time with a short & concise body of work. Prince, on the other hand, released an album almost every single year from 1978 to 2015. He was prolific and uber creative, but the thing with his approach was that he still made sure that each project had its own sound and identity to justify its existence.
Drake, while he definitely releases as frequently as Prince, doesn’t have that same constraint in making each project unique. He just records a bunch of music, most of it good, and throws it all together and calls it an album

Great take. When people describe their perfect Drake album it usually ends up sounding like NWTS. 10-13 songs, 40 produced, Drake rapping crazy on the intro, etc. Also crazy comparison on the Prince/MJ approach with Drake/Kendrick, never thought of that before
I never said it was wack lol that be the thing it just doesn’t fit the vibe of the other songs
He groups songs that are sonically incompatible recklessly that’s why it be so many lol
If he would just be like “aight on this project ima to this sound on the next project I’ll do this other vibe” he’d be straight and drop classics regularly lol. But nooooo he’s gotta stuff everything on there at once and make is eat chicken parm and tacos at the same time 💀
The part about this you're missing is that since as far back as 2009, Drake has had a varying range of vibes on his projects.
So Far Gone has:
Traditional R&B cuts.
Straight up bar-heavy rap cuts.
A pop rap cut.
Houston screw songs.
Indie/alternative cuts.
By Thank Me Later, he started adding at least one pop song per project.
By Views, he extended that sonic palette even further.
You might view it as him being lazy and just throwing things together but it's established that that's simply his identity as an artist. He's an artist with a wide variety of musical influences and tastes which he likes to express on his projects.
Yes, sometimes, he makes things more concise sonically and you get projects like Honestly, Nevermind or Dark Lane Demo Tapes but those are exceptions to the rule.
Suggesting that he shouldn't do that or he should do what other rappers you enjoy do is exactly why he is Drake and they're them. It's amazing to me that this guy is almost 20 years into his mainstream career and people still can't accept him for who he is, whether as a person or as a musician. Everyone is always telling him what he should do, how he should act, what type of songs to make, etc. All things we don't tell other musicians.
One dimensional, subject wise. Once you’ve heard one Drake album you’ve heard everything he’s ever had to say—nothing.
Now stretch that 15 years and it just becomes a depressing second half of a career repeating the same thing over and over again
This is a lazy take because you can say the same thing about most rappers lmao.
2011-2016* imo
But I think he’s just not as inspired, don’t get me wrong I like his whole discography (besides maybe dark lane demo tapes but even that has its moments), I just think he’s ran out of some of his creativity
For all the dogs has some of his best modern moments though, the r&b on there is insanely good imo and the deluxe has some of his best rapping

I have some disagreements about his direction but there is something interesting about the fact this dude is so deep into his career and people react to him the way they do
Genuine anomaly

Yep and it's been that way since day 1.

Hes special
I used to be a hater when I was a kid but I have a lot of respect for his resilience and never die attitude through out the years despite all the lack of understanding and all the discouragement he’s received throughout the years
Drake has said himself that he can't write that s*** anymore. I find his newer stuff pretty disagreeable but it is what it is at this point.
Honestly I think his overall wellbeing hasn't been that great for a while, even before the beef, and it's hard to lock in and be your best self in all circumstances.
Facts that was the rare time he focused on a sound and the result was fire for the most part but I think the execution could have been better
I think the vocal mix is a bit harsh on some of the tracks like Falling Back and his singing wasn’t great on that project which is wild since it’s pretty much an all singing project. I feel like $$4U has way better vocals and singing. I love the beats and the vibe and concept of HNM though. It’s always something with bro lol smh maybe it’s just me
U not gonna bring up how jimmy cooks don’t belong on there?
wym
polar opposites is the best song hes ever made
Im mostly talking hip hop
His RnB and pop sensibilities are not in question
I just miss his 2013-2015 rap consistency
U not gonna bring up how jimmy cooks don’t belong on there?
It definitely don’t lol should’ve been on Her Loss would’ve been fire in
that track list. Since it’s at the end I kinda see it as a bonus track though.

polar opposites is the best song hes ever made
Polar opposites is good but if that’s the best song he’s ever made (it isn’t) that would say a lot more about the rest of his songs than that song 💀
TBH, it’s really half of him not caring and the other half is hip hop being in an awkward space. Before Drake could attach to some type of niche sound and he would feel new. Afro beats, trap, tay keith Memphis ,lil yachty, yeat. But now there really isn’t a new sound in hip hop he can grab from unless he goes super underground .
This next album will show what direction he wants to go in.
