Who do people value more? Him or Pitchfork?

Watch him give this a 7 or something though.

Is this a 'mainstream' hip hop record tho? Do you think they're gonna be playing Mr. Morale in the club? its a great record but not a lot of it is good for a mainstream appeal outside of the album being by a big artist.

“Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers may not be a masterpiece, and it may not always be pleasant, but it’s clearly the work of a genius, accountable to no one but himself, intent on showing you all the scars that he acquired on his way to becoming the defining rapper of his generation, and plenty that came after that, too."

This album is definitely a continuation of DAMN.

"My girl told me don't let these hoes get in my head"

He opens up more about his lust addictions with women and about all his problems and what he had to get over in order to start a family and not pass those problems onto his kids
On DAMN. he thought God would be able to fix all his problems and the world's problems that's why u had the s*** about curses on DAMN. from his cousin but this album barely touches on religion because it's so personal and he realizes that only he can fix his problems
That's why he says "I'm not your savior" "2 Pac dead gotta think for yourself" because he can't help people who don't want to help themselves

I didn't see one. they count on META though. Washington Post gave a good review but no score

actually nvm I don't see Variety on TPAB or DAMN for Metacritic

Yea meta calculates their own scores for reviews without a score count.

Yeah he denounces his previously beliefs a lot in this album

    it’s really interesting to hear

adding to the religious aspect - he also mentions a spiritual transformation:

"Where's My Faith? Told You I Was Christian
    But Just Not Today
I Transformed, Praying To The Trees
    God Is Taken Shape"

"Yesterday, I prayed to the flowers and trees
Gratification to the powers that be"

looks like he wants to feel connected to nature and left the traditional sense of spirituality behind. reminds me a bit of modern pagans tbh

how can it be off-base, when the base is comprised of opinion? on the average, the pitchfork employees at this current time simply liked it a little less than the employees liked DAMN. in 2017. it's really simple to me like i just don't really get it. but f*** it lol

Well yeah, this is all opinion. We're all just expressing our opinions at the end of the day. But if you look at other albums that scored similar scores, or even higher, it becomes pretty clear that they're not entirely reviewing this album based on its artistic merit. The written review either ignores obvious themes and seems biased against how Kendrick expresses his own personal experiences. That is why I call it off-base.

That was a first listen classic Kenny for me… how can u be a fan of his older stuff and not like that? Summer walker verse was fine

Prob cause it's a pretty typical poppy song compared to the rest of the album and Summer Walker is the least standout feature on the project- but Ghost sells the whole thing so I'm not mad at it

  • Die Hard this summer gonna be a vibe
