I really loved CMIYGL. It’s not too popular on here, but I thought it was incredible. I think this album will have a similar place with me as I revisit it more. It’s a lot to unpack. I always like when musicians remove the mask (N95) and show who they are. Break the kayfabe. There’s not much outward lecturing on this album. A lot of it is inward scolding.

Each to their own, but I think the song is very manipulative. I don't see how it really has much to do with his own self-reflection other than to just tick a box off. This is what people refer to when they say Kendrick is engaging in critic-bait.

I don’t think you get what I’m saying. I’m saying that when I first listened to this track my initial takeaway was that Kendrick was holding his nuts and saying ā€œY’all are gonna cancel me for saying the f slur in this song. But I think it’s ok to say the f slur in this song because context matters and everyone today is pretending that it doesn’t. Out of fear. I once thought context doesn’t matter when I told that girl not to say the n word at my show. I was wrong for that.ā€ The problem with this interpretation is that it’s so tonally inconsistent with the rest of the verses that people are gonna call me insane for even suggesting that it could be a possible interpretation. But if this was his take, it’d require an incredible degree of nuance that most people are not emotionally honest enough to confront. I don’t know what I think now. On some level, the idea that Kendrick is playing 4D chess and hanging himself on the cross is still more believable to me than the idea that he’s stupid enough to be that logically inconsistent.

TPAB was such a unique experience for me in that I felt my enjoyment of it peaked around the 20th listen. It just kept getting better and better to a degree I can’t think of for another album.

And to be honest I was reading explanations of it online to better understand how each track fit into the narrative. Not that I couldn’t comprehend it on my own but I enjoyed reading a***ysis of it

One of the many reasons why its my top 1 album of all time. I never expect Kendrick or anyone else to top it cos i legit think it might be impossible

I agree with this sentiment. But where the conversation gets provocative is: do you think Kendrick is saying he thinks it was wrong of him to tell the white fan not to say the n word and embarrass her in front of everyone?

that was the impression i got from it

I don't think it was just as much about that one incident. That incident was used as a reflection of the irony in how black folk have treated queer black folk. I don't think there's much benefit in simply labeling things as right and wrong, hence him outlining his entire journey.

It's a "do you see the contradiction in our actions" to black folk.

Society exploits the ignorant and uneducated. The people at the helm of this county and world are corrupt and motivated by self interest. Kendrick has grown to be a man, a father, a celebrity of major status, and has seen the ugliness that it can bring. Macklemore spoke a ton about this in his song light tunnels. You basically end up knowing too much and if you are genuinely a good person with a good soul, this lifestyle can break you into someone that is extremely pessimistic, which is really the basis of this album. He is speaking on how his entire life and discography and upbringing have put him where he is at now. Does he like it? Does he want to be this way? We don't know, he doesn't know, but this is what life can do as you get older. His fanbase has watched him paint a portrait of his life with each album, and this is just another layer of the portrait that he feels that he wants to express out to the world.

I feel you, like saying, "this is also who I am".

I'm gonna sound pretentious when I say this idc but when you've tapped into some alternative music like alt rock and some Radiohead type music, you really appreciate what's going on with the structure and the arrangements going on in there. I do get why it's polarizing but man... Y'all missing out
