May 13, 2022I've seen a few people saying they've enjoyed how this album has a bit of a loose structure to it that's not as rigid as TPAB, but my only issue is the execution of it feels more to be desired for me. I actually think he achieved that better on untitled unmastered and that's a bunch of loosies

romei guess i'll start by saying i do get what he was trying to go for with the storytelling, like it's meant to be this tale about growing up, maturing, and understanding intentions of words that you learn just by being around people as a kid, as well as not letting things you don't understand prevent you from caring about them
but the way he tries to tell this story is just so ... unnecessary?? i feel like he could've gotten what he wanted to get across just the same without spouting the f-slur like 10 times
i do get why he did it but it doesn't feel warranted. plus the fact that he seemingly is fine with his aunt (now uncle) being trans, but his cousin mary-ann is still referred to with he/him pronouns, as well as deadnamed multiple times
if this is his attempt at normalizing transgender people in hip-hop, he did a really s***ty job at it, honest
i think he did better than most have ever attempted to
i thought it was touching
the entirety of the album is kendrick coming to grips with extremely vulnerable, loaded, and volatile aspects of his life he hasn't revealed before despite people clamoring that he's "talked about this stuff before"
it's very shocking and poised to be polarizing. i dont expect him to handle feelings he's struggled with, with kid gloves
May 13, 2022·1 replyromea trans person's deadname is their birth name, the name they no longer go by. in this example, kendrick's cousin mary-ann's deadname is demetrius. when trans people are referred to by this name, it is usually taken as a derogatory action, and it often makes the person feel invalidated, as if they aren't the gender that they really are
