I might just not be a fan of early Scorsese then because Taxi Driver wouldn't be in my top 5 scorsese either. I like that one a lot more than Mean Streets though
Mean streets just wasn't as great on a technical level (which is ofc understandable), less interesting characters and such a boring plot in comparison to his later work
It just felt like Scorsese was still finding his voice when making mean streets
I don't find the plot that interesting either. It's rather simple but I find the contrast between the spiritual, "bourgeois" and gang life more emotionally resonant than what happens in Goodfellas or Casino.
I would say that it was the moment he found his style. Not necessarily sloppy but rather rough and more in line with realism while his later films delved a bit from that and went into other territories (his montages in particular have an almost hallucinating quality to them).

rewatched a bunch of times cause i like the neighborhoods. Don't Breathe also a good one to put after this one but hbu?
Imo Goodfellas is quite overrated. It's def entertaining but I find it to be a pretty hollow due to it's heavy use of voice over narration and it's pacing which floats a bit too much through the story. Something biopics always do. Tbf, I just cannot stand biopics because of that. Raging Bull has the same issue for me.
Casino is visually more overflowing and has more intense dramatic elements imo.
Mean Streets puts Catholicism and gang life against each other and introduces De Niro's character to create tension. The catholic and "bourgeois" style of living has to face the realities of a violence and power dominated city. This becomes emphasized by plenty of visual cues. It's rougher and more vibrant imo. The pacing almost feels like Fellini towards the end. As if something is going to explode. Once you know how this film works it's way easier to get used to it's style. Goodfellas does that in a similar fashion but it feels more superficial to me because the scenes that concern the bourgeois side feel a little overglossed and the gangster life is more in line with something like Scarface, which could work but takes away from the gist of the story so that the film mostly becomes more about individual scenes and a rather abstract and sometimes stereotyped portrait of gang life.
However, since Scorsese has turned away from that style of filmmaking a long time ago his only 70s work that gets much praise these days is Taxi Driver, his masterpiece imo, but even that one gets criticized more often.
Imo Goodfellas simply fits more with a generation that has been raised on Tarantino I guess. Nothing against Quentin here.
lmao you again s***tin on goodfellas but i can't be mad at you. at least you say funny things like scarface gangsters and tarantino kids. but you know what's really funny?

It's not great, and Anne wasn't that good, but it's ok if you have nothing to watch.
