Yoo listened to desertshore a few times. I felt this way when i listened to it a while ago, I fw it but for some reason it doesnt keep my interest for long. Its def interesting tho and an album that could grow on me with repeated listens but im ambiguous towards gothic music in general. Dont really know why, i love dark music.

There were still tracks that wowed me though, like the falconeer, afraid, and my only child. Those arrangements are beautiful.

the tracks with john cale on other instruments are my favs tbh. Im not a big fan of the harmonium only track like the first one. Its a good song though. Her voice is great and brooding.

Id give it a 6/10 rn. I appreciate it for what it is, but lowkey not my thing. Atleast for right now

The album was pretty good but no songs caught my ear when listening to it at work. Songwriter album fr, very spacious and focused on his singing only. I can see why people wold find this relaxing but I heard artist doing it better to my taste.

    6.5/10 for now.

Definitely a songwriter’s album. The lyrics are great. The album is a grower, give it few more chances in the future.
    Thank you for listening

That’s fair, it does have gothic undertones but it’s more or less medieval folk. Requires a vast amount of listens to really unpack her poetic lyrics. It’s not her most accessible album but it’s the one I felt summed up the past few months best.
Appreciate you trying, gonna post my review for ruins in a bit.

    @Biginthegame

This is one of those types of albums which you can have playing in the background and gaze at the ceiling for hours just thinking. A lot of the tracks are so warm and captivating that you get lost in the prominent keys, surreal background noises (e.g. birds chirping) and lo fi like hiss that’s found throughout the album. It’s so good at creating an atmosphere, minimalism has never sounded so melancholic .

You tend to get lost to the sound of Liz’s vocals, on tracks like holding; her vocals and the dark piano keys work so well together, not a single second wasted. Liked the album initially but love it more so now due to how fitting it is at this time. Beautifully haunting ambient album and there’s not much else that sound like it.

    Favs: Holding & Clearing
    Worst: Made of Metal

    8/10

Yeah it’s great, not sure why I don’t listen to her as much but I’ll give a few other albums a relisten soon.

@NIGHTMAN yo I really enjoyed this album. Mgmt I haven't gone past much more than the hits and wow, does this album really resonate with the current times. Ironically enough, working out is all I can do, than and look at my phone. Sick album, solid 7.5/10

Highlights: She Works Out Too Much, Me and Michael

Joy Harjo - Letter From the End of the Twentieth Century 🎷

Overall I liked the album and would give it a 7/10. At first I was not feeling it too much, I think mostly because of the songs' structure and focus on poetry, which I am not used to. The poetry seems good but I was not paying very much attention to what she was actually saying. Once I got used to the style of songs I started to really enjoy the instrumentation. Really good basslines throughout (especially on title track and A Postcolonial Tale) and I liked the drum+other percussion combo. Also, I thought the more subdued rhythm guitar was very funky and effective. My favorite part besides the general grooves of the songs were the instrumental passages (lot of good sax). Her vocals fit the sound of the songs even though I didnt really like them, but I did not like the occasional non-poetry vocals on some parts. The instruments/texture of this album reminded me of the instrumental part in OutKast's Liberation, which is a high compliment since it's on one of my favorite albums OAT. I think I would appreciate this album more once I delve deeper into its adjacent styles, I have listened to some jazz-funk but never listened to any jazz poetry or afro jazz so I'm not very accustomed to what makes them tick.

I love A Postcolonial Tale too and yea I had a feeling it would require some adjusting to someone not accustomed to the genres. Most of what you picked up is the same as I what I love about the album too, the instrumentation is quality and the sax is on fire. Nice review :3
