Bruh... you telling me?! Same s*** I was going through too lmao.
Imma finally give covert coup a proper listen now thanks to you, I’ve always liked the album but I skipped around it too much
I've been avoiding revisiting this album for a while, my ex was actually cousins with Sampha so a lot of the songs felt really personal because she'd talk about Sampha's mum Aunty Binty, show me pics of herself with Sampha as kids and we'd attend his London shows together.
You can tell just from the lyrics how personal this record was, so much fear, anxiety and melancholy. It's like he addressed all that was happening in his life during the absence and excruciating wait for the debut. I also love how family is such a big part of his life, What Shouldn't I be is a fitting end to the album and sums this point up. It might sound morbid but I've always been drawn to how he describes dealing with death, as someone who also lost a father, his lyrics always hit a certain nerve. His songwriting on this honestly has no faults.
Production till this day still sounds refreshing, I loved his work with SBTRKT and some of the songs on here developed on that earlier sounds. I also loved the use of Kora and drums, reinforcing his West African heritage and the short film he released alongside the album was evidence of how much Sierra Leone defined this album.
Also, the emotion that he is able to invoke with his vocals is one of the first things that drew me to Sampha and man does he display this on Plastic 100, Incomplete Kisses and Piano.
Fav Tracks: Plastic 100(I prefer the Fader live version), What Shouldn't I be, Reverse Faults
I also added the Japanese Bonus track In Between and Overseas to my version of the album because it's f***ing beautiful, have you heard it?
Sorry for the long message but this album definitely has a special resonance with me s*** is a classic.

solid indie record which holds up well, the lead single are still crazy but there are no filler anyways 8/10
Petals For Armor by Hayley Williams
Great lyrics as always but the album felt very long because some of it was very samey. Actually missed all the bells and whistles of a Paramore album.
Keepers: Leave It Alone, Over Yet, Sugar On The Rim
7/10
Descendants Of Cain by KA
Making a connection between brothers & biblical figures Cain & Abel fighting, with black on black crime is very inspired.
Keepers: The whole album but The Eye Of A Needle is my favorite track
8/10
It Was Good Until It Wasnt by Kehlani
6/10

still amazing
just a miniview @cashchie
PND1 is still an incredible gem in the entire alt-r&b scene. jahron’s hazy vocals and delivery, alongside the neo-psychlike production really make the whole project shine. crazy to think that jahron produced this entire tape by himself (apart from 40 co-producing the drake feat ofc)
main problem for me is that jahron can be really jaring and boring at times, especially near the end. it seemed to be a major problem with most of the OVO crew, besides drake, their beats and vocals are sleep inducing, and focus is next to none. jahron seems to do it the best, but not by much.
it’s still a great project relistening to it, but it’s flaws are really starting to show the more i replay it. party’s music is simply nightride car music, and i’m not gonna be harsher on it because of that.
8/10
highlights: welcome to the party, relax with me, break from toronto
lowlights: over here (i never really liked any drake involved tracks during this era, live for is another example)
ay bro glad you are vibing to it, i'm not sure what it is about it, but PND1 is something I always return to
I'll be honest, i've never even heard of stereolab
but that is why I signed up to do this, to find new music
listened to the first few songs and it's very different from my usual sound, but hopefull will listen to the full thing tonight and give my thoughts soon

Yeti on Horseback- The Great Dying
Doom metal band from Canada I found randomly on Bandcamp. Really enjoyed their album.
