no 20 year old kid can afford a house
and the US is not about to overhaul the system and just have state issued housing for all
btw there is income based housing that helps people live affordably and some are very nice buildings

coltrupi agree that landlords add zero value to society but i dont think the existence of landlords is mutually exclusive with housing for all.
policies like national rent control/increased eviction requirements are more politically feasible and nearly as effective as moonshot plans to "abolish landlords"
Considering how many politicians prolly have interests aligned with real estate industry I dont think that's feasible at all. Where are they now? Not even making symbolic gestures to ppl about to be evicted

Scratchin MambaWell they don't allow people to live on land, they charge people to live on land.
They add no value to society, yet they extract a whole lot of it, that makes it inherently exploitative.
Yes they charge people to live on their own land. But with this logic charging anyone to rent out anything is "evil".
And like a user said before they do add to society. Because they pay taxes for their property which in turns go to the country's budget. They also provide people with a cheaper alternative than a permanent living, is that not providing anything to society ?

Also I assume to abolish this concept is to also completely get rid of the real estate investment market which really kills a lot of opportunity to have nicer houses. In your world, we would all be living in huts and paying way higher in taxes, giving the government way too much power in how they now control our shelter.

Does abolishing landlords suddenly turn all houses into huts
