the trailer clearly showed neo on screen matrix 1 footage. We see them on the roof watching reloaded while he steps off cliff in teaser.

SO THE MACHINES ARE LIKELY MAKING HIM THINK THE FIRST 3 MOVIES WERE JUST FICTION SO THAT HE CAN RETURN TO A NORMAL LIFE. Even if that is true by that logic he would recognize trinity

so there is more to it. Its not just the "it was a dream" trope you are expecting

kind of sounds like that first idea that you come up with for a project and then over time as you refine the work you realize that that idea while inspiring won’t really work anymore so you jettison it
