Ed_loverThere’s even revisionist history as it pertains to Kendrick’s control verse. Up until 2013, Drake had pretty much solidified a respectable career and was clearly viewed as the revision of the new school.
GKMC was released in the fall of 2012 and clearly was subject to massive critical acclaim and commercial success. He had projects before then but was still relatively under the radar. 5-6 months later he releases the control verse and then the whole “Kendrick is the king”, “Drake ducking smoke” narrative begins.
Drake looked at it from this perspective. You just came in the game, haven’t even established yourself in terms of longevity and now you wanna pop your s*** with all this king talk. Of course he’s gonna feel funny.
Or moreso the fact that then (JUST LIKE NOW) Kendrick kinda bites into the usual propaganda/bait of positioning him as the anti-Drake.
Kendrick's whole comeup gimmick was being reminiscent of old-school Rap, being some type of 2Pac successor, and having a classic Compton vibe.
He was the perfect nigga for old-heads who hated what Drake was doing to Rap to hide behind lmao. Still Drake didn't feed into that and supported him through 2011-2013 only for him to feed into that nonsense with Control.
