I’m genuinely trying to give you and others context here with a perfect example of how charts don’t represent everything.

I grew up in California like many others where 70% of many schools including mine are Latinos. I am literally like many others pretty much fluent in Spanish. Growing up Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, Wisin y Yandel and Vicente Fernandez has always been played around as much as PAC, Mac Dre, 40 etc

Before streaming, Spanish music was always underrepresented due to impact because radio determined most of the charts and they were inherently racist. It was always heavily played in communities. With streaming that has changed. Even right now it’s underrepresented . Look at the touring of not just reggaeton but banda artists who have no charting songs and are doing 200M+ tours in US selling out stadiums.

Some of y’all can be dismissive but I know some will actually appreciate the context. Thats why charts are not everything. There are 50M+ people speaking Spanish here and places like California they are literally the biggest ethnicity.

Doesn’t longevity matter more? That means it remains in people’s minds. That’s typically how the biggest songs of all time that people look back on, and that continue to be played years later, are determined.

Otherwise, it’s essentially a novelty song that might get busted out in 10-15 years within a movie featuring a flashback scene where said given song is being played at a house party so that some people in the theater watching can go “Oh yeah, I remember that song!”.

WAP is an example of this, that was absolutely everywhere for a few months, arguably even the highest peak for a female rap song in the last 10 years. Arguably even a top 10 rap song peak in the last 10 years. But just 2 years later it wasnt being listened to much anymore, cause people got tired of it

then some songs (especially pop) have way lower peaks, but are around for years, because people don't really get sick of them. Cruel Summer by Taylor Swift is an example of that

I don't doubt that he was popping in certain communities like that, but that's the whole point of Billboard, to show what's actually popping across the whole country with the majority of people. He went from being a local artist, to having 10s of millions of white suburban girls across the country shaking their ass to him. That's what you need to be actually big, you're never gonna get that by just having the minority communities locked down
