It's a matter of personal opinion. I've been a big Drake fan for over 10 years, but I feel that his recent music doesn't match the quality of albums like "Take Care," "Nothing Was the Same," and "If You're Reading This It's Too Late." If you disagree, that's completely okay.

I will say that "HNVM" was a cohesive album with a fresh sound, and I really enjoyed it. However, I think his other recent work feels like a rehash of earlier songs, but not as good. That's just my perspective, and I believe that if you asked 100 people, most would agree with me but at the end it’s subjective.

The only wait length with any correlation to higher album sales is a few weeks to a month and a few weeks. Anything longer is a potential detriment to first week sales

I never said artists do not CARE about first week numbers.

What I said is that, in pop music, they do not matter above everything else as we see in rap music.

Pop music always performs best in the longterm.

Bruno Mars has never cleared 300K first week, yet all of his albums are some of the highest selling of the 2010s. That’s my point.

Neither Short n Sweet or Hit Me Hard and Soft cleared 400K first week, and yet both finished in the Top 5 for sales in 2024. That’s my point.

Obviously every artist wants to sell as much as possible opening week. But pop releases (save for the exceptions such as Taylor and Adele) generally perform better in the longterm rather than the short term, especially in the streaming era

This is a silly point. We're in the streaming era. The only albums that will ever go Gold, Platinum or Multi-Platinum are albums that keep moving a considerable amount of units long after the first week. Same thing applied to all the Multi-Platinum albums we got before the streaming era.

Even if your point is that pop stars don't usually have huge debut weeks, that's still false and something that only applies to a few acts. Morgan Wallen, Harry Styles, Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo all release albums that score strong debuts and continue on to keep selling units till they go Multi-Platinum.

To illustrate my point about pop artists usually never having super high first week numbers but still finishing towards the top in sales by year’s end, I will show you each of these artist’s first week numbers and where each respective album finished for the year-end of the year it released:

Morgan Wallen:
Dangerous: The Double Album (2021): 263K [finished 1st]
One Thing at a Time (2023): 501K [finished 1st]

Billie Eilish:
WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? (2019): 313K [finished 2nd]
Happier Than Ever (2021): 238K [finished 15th]
HIT ME HARD AND SOFT (2024): 339K [finished 5th]

Olivia Rodrigo:
Sour (2021): 295K [finished 2nd]
Guts (2023): 302K [finished 19th]

Harry Styles:
Fine Line (2019): 478K [released Dec. 2019, finished **9th**in 2020]
Harry’s House (2022): 521K [finished 4th]

Sabrina Carpenter:
Short n’ Sweet (2024): 362K [finished 3rd]

You’re in here saying that if Hurry Up Tomorrow doesn’t clear 400K+ first week it’s a flop, but only 3 of these 10 albums cleared 400K first week. And still, 7/10 of them finished Top 5 in sales in their respective years, 8/10 finishing Top 10.

How do you not see the point I’m making that pop artists (outside of Taylor and Adele) generally don’t have crazy first week sales but still finish high in the longterm regardless?

All I see is you making excuses for Abel tbh. The reality of the streaming era is that yes, it's not needed for any album to have a massive debut week to be successful but there's a reason why all artists go out of their way to give themselves the best chance to score massive debut weeks. A good headstart is always welcomed.

Like I said yesterday, Abel has debuted with over 300k units with 3 of his 5 studio albums we have the first-week numbers for. I don't think Bruno has ever debuted with 300k units with any album so stop bringing him or other artists who have never reached that peak, yet alone done so multiple times, into this. They're not who are being discussed.

Obviously if Abel hadn't done 400k+ units twice before, and he wasn't releasing an album with multiple physical variant options as well as having 22 songs, I wouldn't have projected 400k+ for him. Dawn FM didn't have any physicals upon release. Kiss Land was before he went pop and blew up so those are outliers. He dropped an EP that debuted with more units than most artists' albums. He's playing stadiums in the US.

My issue is you're acting like I'm suggesting something unreasonable when I'm not. Yes, he may very well not reach those numbers with this album but that's like someone suggesting a standard Drake rap album with 20+ songs will debut with 400k+ units and a Drake fan jumping in to give excuse after excuse as to why that wouldn't be happening. Yes, it may not happen because people don't connect with the songs or whatever reason but suggesting it's impossible when the album is perfectly suited to reach that mark, is being disingenuous.

BBTM: every song over 100 million streams, 4 songs over 1 billion streams
Starboy: every song over 100 million streams, 5 songs over 1 billion streams
MDM: every song over 200 million streams, 2 songs over 1 billion streams
AH: every song over 100 million streams, 5 songs over 1 billion streams (out of 14 tracks)
Dawn FM: if we don't count the interludes and skits then there's only one song under 100 million streams too and that album is considered a flop

but yeah, people only listen 1-2 songs per album It's the complete opposite since multiple projects from him went viral in the last years. People love his deep cuts too.
