Promo does matter. The difference-maker is how effective said promo is. For Abel, him having an extended rollout clearly didn't work out for him.

He'd have been better served announcing the album officially maybe 7-10 days before dropping it to maximize the hype. That's what Bad Bunny and Tyler did and it worked wonders for them.

I also feel like because none of the singles really caught on with the GP, people weren't really invested in what the album's impending release.

It's a matter of personal opinion. I've been a big Drake fan for over 10 years, but I feel that his recent music doesn't match the quality of albums like "Take Care," "Nothing Was the Same," and "If You're Reading This It's Too Late." If you disagree, that's completely okay.

I will say that "HNVM" was a cohesive album with a fresh sound, and I really enjoyed it. However, I think his other recent work feels like a rehash of earlier songs, but not as good. That's just my perspective, and I believe that if you asked 100 people, most would agree with me but at the end it’s subjective.

That’s true but the fact that some of Abel’s old music ( albums ) go viral after 5/6 years and end up being his best selling work means his music ages well which is kinda the biggest achievement you can have as a artist.
