He is clearly adding songs to his album that he knows will be singles. I don't get the point of pretending that Kendrick doesn't plan his albums out.

Nobody said he doesn’t do that.

The difference is Drake’s approach to the ENTIRE album is making something palatable to as many audiences as possible.

Kendrick having one or two singles that would perform well on radio is not the same thing.

Like I said, DAMN. is his only album that you can argue was made for the radio in totality

Drake literally adds songs that are not made to be singles and even adds skits and intro/outros that would ruin songs single potential. This is very clear on CLB.

Yeah songs like Girls Want Girls, Fair Trade, Way 2 Sexy, No Friends in the Industry, Knife Talk, Fountains, Get Along Better, IMY2, etc. certainly weren’t made with playlisting/the radio in mind

Kendrick, makes a listenable song: "he did it to speak to your soul and to reconcile your innermost demons. No attempt at making a hit whatsoever."

Drake released Marvins Room as the lead single from Take Care. He released Slime You Out as the lead single from For All the Dogs lmao. The idea that Drake has always chased hits is ridiculous. He has just as many songs where he's being introspective about his life as he does songs you could call hits. Hell, any legit Drake fan would tell you that the songs they love him for the most are album cuts that never get pushed as singles.

Dude doesn't resort to any of the tactics other artists resort to to boost his albums or his singles but they'll still swear to you that he's nothing more than a hopeless idiot chasing hits with every song he makes

GKMC is a West Coast concept album.

TPAB is a jazz-influenced conscious rap album.

Mr. Morale is an album about therapy and mental health.

GNX is a super regional West Coast album.

The only album of his you can say was made for the radio was DAMN.

Whereas for Drake, you can argue every single project of his besides a small few were made for a wide demographic

Regarding the popstar discussion:

Kendrick being named the #1 Popstar of 2024 is not the same context as when someone calls Drake a popstar as an artist.

That list was just ranking the most Pop-ular musicians of 2024, hence the term Pop Star.

When people call Drake a popstar, they are referring to the way in which he approaches and creates his art, where he’s trying to appeal to several different demographics at once and create radio hit singles, something that popstars, or pop musicians do.

Kendrick, on the other hand, always approaches music completely from a hip-hop angle. An album like GNX is popular, yes, but it’s literally a super regional West Coast rap album with obscure West Coast rappers on it that the average person outside of California had never heard of before the album released.

It’s not a slight to call Drake a popstar, he has self-proclaimed that about himself to be fair. But there’s a difference in context in Billboard crowning Kendrick the #1 Popstar of a year, and people referring to Drake as a popstar to describe who he is as an artist
