The reason for these numbers are reason #1 and #1 alone. I spent all summer saying it that the window Kendrick had to take advantage of the momentum from the Drake beef for his album was very short. If he'd dropped his album in May or even June, it'd have done massive numbers because enough casual fans were still dialled into what was going on.

This is what Drake knew to do with his beef with Meek and Pusha T. He won against Meek and instead of agreeing to push Back to Back as a radio single (something a few radio programmers confirmed), he dropped Hotline Bling and told the label to push that instead (something they apparently were at first hesitant to do because it didn't have an immediate splash on the charts). Same with the Pusha beef. Right after that, we got Scorpion, In My Feelings went #1 for 10 weeks and the rest is history.

Hotline Bling changed the trajectory of Drake's career and is one of his most essential songs in that regard. Without the success of Hotline Bling in breaking the proverbial glass ceiling above Drake's head, I don't think we get One Dance going #1 for 10 weeks. I don't think we get Views doing 1M+ units first week. I even believe Drake's success in 2018 can be tied back to Hotline Bling being his first true crossover record.

That's what Kendrick could have done. The moment The Heart Part 6 dropped and it was decided he'd won, he should have deferred and dropped another banger that had absolutely nothing to do with Drake or the beef to solidify himself as a hit-maker and to let all the casual eyes he had on him know that he's more than a nigga who goes at Drake. But he didn't do that. Instead, he doubled down by doing the pop out and released the music video and didn't drop or do anything for MONTHS.

There's an entire generation of casual listeners now who only know Kendrick as the Not Like Us guy. If you doubt me, recognise how the best-performing song off his new album is the one that sounds and is structured closest to how Not Like Us sounded.

Kendrick won the rap battle but I believe he'll regret letting Not Like Us get as big as it got because it's something he'll never be able to outrun.
