Him saying streaming is a "metric that can 100% actively track true consumer demand" when it's not true at all.

If a song jumped 89 spots on the charts most people would think that song is about to be a massive hit, when in reality people played it by mistake. (it dropped 40 spots days after).

When did I say radio was good or any indicator of an artists demand lol

It's not 100% but it's far better than all of the alternatives at least

I don't think they really played that song by mistake tho, doesn't spotify only count songs streamed for over 30s? If it was by mistake, they'd skip, but they chose to keep streaming it

Mistake might not be the best word, more like it wasn't a conscious decision to play that song like Deezed is suggesting.

And passive listening is a very real thing, the song isn't abrasive enough for people to need to skip so they'll let it play. There's literal companies that create music just for that sole reason:

    musicbusinessworldwide.com/remember-spotify-fake-artist-theyre-still-going-strong-and-still-attracting-scandal

Nobody has passively purchased a CD lol, so i'll say supporting an artist with physical sales is still a much better indicator of actual demand.

    You get it

That’s the #1 reason pure sales will ALWAYS be > streaming.

It’s simply active support vs. passive support

I also feel like streaming killed the deep cut, but that’s a whole other discussion

yeah ngl everybody expects every song to hit on first listen, that doesn’t even work for a lot of genres

Is this about to be the first week in like 2 years that Morgan wallen won’t have an album in the top 10?

  • Nov 21, 2024

i do think the discussion of buying vs streaming music is stupid, the way people consume music has changed so many times and off course charts and certifications have to adapt to them, bet the charts had a big change once itunes dropped too, people didn’t need to physically go to a store no more

My point is that Sabrina was probably making literal pennies for ten years on streaming before she blew up big this year.

Is it easier for artists to blow up now? Sure.

But it’s still such a long shot chance, that for all of the smaller artists or the artists that never really breakthrough on a major level, streaming is not benefitting them in enough of a financial way

they should tour more often or sell merch then, like every other job in the world u gotta adapt with the times, we’re not goin back in time cuz artist “deserve” special treatment, do u care this much about jobs getting replaced by machines?

nigga really cares about how much sabrina carpenter makes off her lil pop songs, someone big enough to still make millions off streaming, nothing even guarantees these same songs would’ve been half as big if people had to pay for them (and that’s ok, different times, different behaviors)

Yes, I do actually. I don’t agree with that either.

Smaller artists can’t just say “oh let’s tour then”; the percentage of streaming listeners who will actually buy a ticket to go see an artist live is small, and for less-known artists their fanbases are already small as it is, so some of them might literally not even have the capacity (or the financial ability) to tour

i feel bad for people losing their jobs too but the reality is nobody will give an handout either, barely anyone can survive with only one stream of income anymore, if the music ain’t paying enough they gotta do something on the side it is what it is, like everyone else, every other job has fluctuations on their worth, programming used to be one of the safest jobs and now their workforce is being highly affected by AI

it’s hard to accept but the reality is entertainment (music, cinema, games, etc) are worth less than they used to be, there’s too much of it, too much competition for our attention

and if u can’t convince someone to see u live high chances u can’t convince them to buy an album either

sorry for all that yapping, i’m just tired of streaming vs buying arguments
