It’s true though, carnival is 100% bigger than every drake hit this decade. that doesn’t mean he’s bigger overall. im saying this as someone who thinks drake has been the far better artist for 7 years now

maybe drake’s 2020s hits would have more staying power if the nigga didn't act like he’s too cool to care about his songs after dropping them lmao that’s on him

You’re talking about pop music as if it’s a meritocracy

Great hooks are tho. Hype and demand will always come down to great hooks at the core. These mfs just start having lackluster hooks tbh that’s why they start selling less than before (and that’s not to minimize - hooks are just THAT important)

I’m not going to say you don’t have a point at all, memorable hooks are a factor and currency. What makes a “great” hook is a little debatable but I assume you just mean hooks that grab the public attention. Idk if it’s black and white that pop hits are 100% the best hooks though.

It’s a part of pop song craft to have a catchy simple memorable hook, and if you have a hook that resonates obviously that’s good. But to suggest it’s on a true meritocracy level sounds like stretch. So many things go into it now, including how an artist looks and their social media presence. You saying there’s not artists with great hooks that never broke? Because that wouldn’t be a meritocracy.

It’s no songs that the public missed that could’ve hit big with the right push that many other hits have benefitted from? Or perhaps the right music video and visual presentation or meme format? Or even the song being given to a more marketable artist?

Maybe I’m taking you too literal there but it’s known you need a lot of money and in most cases need to be visually appealing or marketable outside the music in some way to break a record, it’s not as simple as a “great hook” anymore from where I’m sitting, though it helps to have one

Edit: chopped a bunch to be more concise (lol)

I’ll be the first to admit I didn’t foresee kanye crazy ass having a real, genuine hit ever again but carnival is clearly that. call it what it is. it’s the biggest hit of the year no need to cope

Don’t even argue with that clown. Dude was working overtime to convince everyone that interview he did with that white girl was the peak of dry humor or some bullshit.

I get it but Drake could rap about dating women in their 20s and partying until he’s 75 and it’s still not really in the same ballpark as actual nazi adjacent lyricism

Wasn’t saying pop hooks have the best hooks didn’t mean to sound like I was making that point lol. Just that the general public can smell through the bullshit and no amount of rolling out can make up for the need for great hooks. Like I think great hooks are a REQUIREMENT for great sales straight up and in most genres
