Usually more indicative of favorable playlist placement and one popular song carrying streams to make an artist seem more broadly popular than they really are

Then, these two should be in the top 10.

This will never mean s***. What you should focus on are their daily streams, not monthly listeners.

It’s not the definitive metric to judge an artist’s popularity, but it does. It shows an artist’s reach.

Reach in playlists doesn't really translate to actual streams tho. The Weeknd has the most monthly listeners but Taylor outstreams him every single month for the past 2 years

If you want to get a real sense of popularity just pay attention to the top artists every week and see who gets the most streams because monthly listeners will give you the wrong impression and not the actual facts

Searching old monthly listeners lists and found this from July 2019 😭

    Ed Sheeran – 69.65m
    Shawn Mendes – 56.48m
    Camila Cabello – 54.99m
    J Balvin – 54.58m
    Khalid – 54.56m
    Justin Bieber – 52.05m
    Billie Eilish – 50.02m
    Post Malone – 48.54m
    Lil Nas X – 48.37m
    Daddy Yankee – 46.70m

    A different era

It's not even a legitimate metric in popularity. The problem is people see monthly listeners and think it means total listeners each month, when that isn't the case. Rihanna currently has more monthly listeners than Drake but she's averaging nowhere near as many streams as him daily. Same goes for The Weeknd having more monthly listeners than Taylor Swift while Taylor is actually the one getting streamed more daily. It's very misleading and you boldly posting it in here like it's meant to mean something proves you think it actually holds some weight when it really doesn't. Especially when an artist can gain upwards of 20M monthly listeners off of 1 song.

Compare this list from 2019 with the one from today. Are you gonna tell me they are 100% meaningless and not an accurate representation of who’s popular at the moment? Why aren’t Camila, Shawn and Khalid in the top 10 currently but Taylor, Dua and Abel are?

Like I said, it shows an artist’s reach. Rihanna hasn’t dropped in years but +80M people played at least one of her songs in the last month. Someone gaining 20M listeners bc of one song is also them growing their reach and the numbers show that. That’s what happened with Beyoncé since Texas Hold Em. The listeners might decrease later, but right now 71M people listened to one of her songs in the past month.

Daily streams are also not a perfect metric of popularity. It might be better for people that have like 37163 songs like Drake and Taylor, and worse for people with short discographies like Billie.

Anyway, back to the initial point. Ed Sheeran being out of the top 10 is shocking tbh, because he was the artist with most listeners for ages aka the biggest reach on Spotify. He dropped two albums last year.

Jid had like 50 million listeners at one point. It just shows unique listeners worldwide. Carti was at like 10 million before he did song with the weekend and Kanye now he is at around 50 million. Maybe need an average stream per listener stat.

But it doesnt matter if its because of one song or 30 songs, a listener is a listener. Surround Sound is a hit.

Let's divide the # of daily streams in the past day with the # of tracks of the top 10 artists with the most monthly listeners currently.

For example, Taylor had 87.6M streams and she has 552 tracks on Spotify, Drake had 52.2M streams with 476 tracks, etc

    1. Bruno Mars: ~200kk
    2. The Weeknd: ~165kk
    3. Taylor Swift: ~159kk
    4. Kanye West: ~113kk
    5. Drake: ~110kk
    6. Ariana Grande: ~84kk
    7. Dua Lipa: ~82kk
    8. Justin Bieber: ~75kk
    9. Rihanna: ~71kk
    10. Coldplay: ~56kk

    Agreed.

Monthly listeners could literally be due to ONE big record. It could be 29 million listening to the pop hit and 1 million actually listening to your catalog 😅😅

And? A listener is a listener. Tyla’s 28.3M listeners don’t count because 98% of them are there because of one song? Like I said 10 times, it shows an artist’s reach. The Weeknd has by far the biggest reach on Spotify due to the amount of hits he had in the past years.

it doesn't show their reach though, it shows their hits reach, which is entirely different

24kgoldn had more monthly listeners (around 40m) than kendrick & uzi for like 6 months a few years ago. he dropped an album and it sold 20k first week cause he had no reach as an artist

tyla & tyler the creator have the same monthly listeners atm, I'd bet everything that Tyler will sell at least 3x more fw with his next album than Tyla will with her next, itlll probably be like 5x more

    😴

I don’t know why certain users are in ther feeling because of this. I wonder if it’s because certain artists are above their favs?

No one said his career is over. But he used to be the most popular act on Spotify (aka the most people listening to at least one of his songs) for most of the 2010s, now he just left the top 10. It’s definitely something to notice, especially that he dropped two albums in 2023 (And he might return anyway, because Bruno’s listeners are decreasing post-Valentine’s Day impact)

24Kgoldn had a big hit and because of this song, more people were listening to him at certain point over Kendrick and Lil Uzi Vert, even if it just one song. It doesn’t mean 24KGoldn was a more popular rapper than them in general. Just that more people were listening to him, even if it was just one song, than Lil Uzi Vert and Kendrick. That was factually correct.

    However, today:

    24KGoldn: 12.8M
    Lil Uzi Vert: 33.3M
    Kendrick Lamar: 53M

Idk man, that’s where tiktok has created a more telling divide unlike when U Guessed It or Mo Bamba dropped

    I bet outside of

Push the f***ing pack off of the porch or break a pound down
Get this strap, if it happen to blow, it makes surround sounds
P****cat on my lap, push it back and go to town down
Putting rap on my back, and I'm blackin', snatchin' crowns

Most people who learned the song via the trend couldn’t quote you even a bar from the verses, tell you who Baby Tate is or even realize 21 is on the song. It’s a reason the song didn’t blow until the tiktok trend.

Reversely, you have songs like Die For You or the Keyshia Cole’s song love which were hits when they dropped and are hits now that they caught a trend.
