FreightNo it doesn’t. You can’t point to any objective measure of why those resemble side projects but More Life is more akin to a studio album
I’ve broke this down multiple times now:
IYRTITL - bar heavy, rap focused, no pop crossover, minimal features, less than 20 songs, no lead single
WATTBA - collab project with Future, so obviously wouldn’t count as a solo Drake studio album
DLDT - a collection of looses/leaks that were made during the recording sessions for CLB. Also probably his most bar heavy project since IYRTITL, not much pop crossover, less than 15 songs, & released during the first months of lockdown
More Life has all of the makings of a Drake studio album: 20+ song tracklist, heavy pop crossover appeal, a nice blend between rap/R&B/pop/world sounds, various high profile features, a lead single, and a by-the-numbers Drake album outro

Because despite Drake being the biggest artist of 2016 and 2017 being Kendrick's biggest career year, Drake still outdid Kendrick in 2017

More Life is the farthest thing from a mixtape.
IYRTITL is a mixtape.
WATTBA is a mixtape.
DLDT is a mixtape, although it’s closer to a B-sides.
More Life is an album that was promoted as a “playlist”, so y’all won’t count it

Even those are all MUCH different situations than More Life.
More Life literally plays as a bigger, more expansive Views, with 5x the amount of features.
IYRTITL is a bar heavy mixtape with minimal features with no pop crossover appeal (unlike Views, More Life, Scorpion, and CLB)
WATTBA is a collab album.
DLDT is a collection of leaks and looses that didn’t make CLB.
This is why I’m saying More Life (even it’s technically not a studio album) getting treated as a little side project is delusion
Why does having 5x the amount of features means it’s more reminiscent of a studio album? NWTS, Views, and Scorp all had minimal features. Wouldn’t having more features means he’s treating the project as something more akin to Cruel Summer or a Dreamville tape, where he’s just making music with all his friends?

His sales are great but he hasn’t dropped a legitimately great project since 2015, and he’s my second favorite rapper. Just sucks to see a dude with so much talent sell himself short creatively every single go round

Especially now that we're in the streaming era when first week numbers aren't everything. Donda did 309k first week but it's barely moved 1M units while CLB is almost at 3M units. First week numbers aren't the only thing that matters.

Take Care and CLB had extensive feature lists
And those are each like five years removed from More Life. It’s clear that More Life is not indicative of what a studio album from Drake meant at that point in time.
Arguing that More Life is a serious release because he put a bunch of UK rappers that no one outside of the UK actually listens to makes no sense

I don't disagree with that but this particular discussion was never just about the first week. People legit believed Kendrick had a bigger year than Drake in 2017 and I provided data to prove that's false.
