You’re reading my mind bro. That’s exactly why Drake has unprecedented success. If you take the smoke and mirrors away (awards/critics) then it’s undeniable he’s mastered song creation. The only other guys on his level are like The Beatles.

I’m glad Drake himself always puts the artform and his love for music above everything. I’m one of those fans that doesn’t want him to create a so-called “cohesive body of work” (as if his albums aren’t that already) because then it would be forced music for the sake of other peoples opinions.

Drake knows what sounds good and when it comes to lyricism I don’t think there is anybody better. It’s hard to say that because music can be so different - how do you compare Sufjan Stevens with Drake really? - but I think he’s mastered it at a level no one can get near.

I think that’s what bothers Kanye deeply - he thought he was the standout artist for this time, and in some ways he is - and it’s why Kendrick needs 5 years and social justice issues to propel him.

How crazy to have an artist that basically never misses. Even with all the expectation and the consistency of him dropping he keeps rising to the occasion. It’s one thing he made to note in his Fader (iirc) interview where he’s saying he’s still trying to be the artist where you’re like “who is that?”.

    exactly

it's a reason kanye, someone who understands this s*** better than anyone, is obsessed with drake.

kanye keeps saying he's steve jobs. kanye says the iphone is the greatest invention of all time.

kanye also says drake makes the musical equivalent of the iphone.

    you do the math

You made me go see what they saying on r/KendrickLamar. Someone made a whole post about how the album is a “masterpiece” but they’re not a fan of it. Wtf kind of delusion is that

I genuinely think it’s an okay decent album but if it was made by anyone other than Kendrick his own fans would be screaming mid and how it’s a worse version of a Kendrick album

Critics wouldn't give it a quarter of the acclaim it has if it was released by anyone else.

I've been saying the same thing for years. He can never be criticized.

it's insane how people actually think any of that is proper promo lol

and if that is promo to them, how aren't the blogs Kendrick put out a few months ago? and all the tweets/leaks from TDE about how he wants to leave them etc... or his fts on Keem's album. We can stretch s*** if we want.

Kendrick is, critically, the most overrated artist by far. You would think he had his own political party if he was that influential. If you removed the political bias these lib reviewers had he’d be more around an 8/10 - which is still great.

The issue with Kenny is that he somehow unites the hoteps/ankh-right folks with the white liberal critics who don’t wanna be the ones to criticize him, while going OD hate in Harlow to seem down with the culture.

It’s a grating combo of people caping for him. And I say that as someone who loves Kenny (and the album) so much, but convo around him is just a lot and this album cycle really opened my eyes.
