It's just because westerns were another genre that was almost strictly composed of adventures and violence and so were not taken serious for the first half century of their existence. They are not going to progress in the same way for alot of reasons but for now they are comparable.

Donners 70s Superman formed the mold like Stagecoach did in late thirties.

Decade later Burton's Batman's took it further like My Darling Clementine and Red River in the forties.

X-Men and Spidermans brought it the golden era like all the 50s westerns did when Searchers, Johnny Guitar and all Jimmy Stewart/Mann collabs.

Iron Man began an even bigger wave took over everything in the next era similar to the spaghetti westerns in the 60s.

Now we're basically in the revision era like the were in the 70s

In order for the genre to progress the same way westerns did we would need more auteur driven superhero films which is almost impossible within today’s studio system. We’re never going to experience something like Batman Returns, Ang Lee’s Hulk or even Snyder’s take on DC again unless people can get passed their own idea of what a superhero should be like.

I see the genre progressing more on tv than I do in film tbh. Streaming companies are able to adapt lesser known superhero comics and do whatever they want with them without the fear of not appealing to a wider audience. If The Boys, Legion, Doom Patrol and Wandavision were all going to be produced as films they would never make it passed a pitch meeting.

I hope I’m wrong and I honestly love your optimism towards the genre - you bring a level of enthusiasm & knowledge without a single hint of pretentiousness that’s missing from film discourse nowadays. I just personally see the future of blockbuster filmmaking in general as incredibly bleak.

Nah you know more than most lol you could’ve easily came into the discussion weaponizing your knowledge of film & comics to invalidate the opinions of others but you’d rather have an actual discussion and that’s always appreciative to me. I always find that there’s less pretentiousness surrounding film, music & comic discourse offline than there is online - so many people online just want to be able to flex their knowledge instead of engaging in actual discussions & it completely removes the fun from it. We should be challenging each other’s ideas without resorting to “oh you haven’t consumed as much media as me so therefore your opinion is invalid”. That type of attitude is what creates the cinebro who refuses to watch anything considered art house or foreign or people who think comic book fans act like the comic book guy in The Simpsons. They feel intimidated rather than inspired to watch or read anything that’s out of their comfort zone.

Don’t be afraid to suck your own d*** fam, take a compliment lol.

Watching Man of Steel rn... some of these special effects ain’t age too well

The movie itself is better than I remember though still don’t really like Lois however. She seems so out of place in the movie.

Bruh this world engine s*** had to have killed MILLIONS of people the destruction in this movie is brazy brazy
