I loved it so much. I’m usually not drawn to stories that deal with American slavery cause I feel like it’s been over done but this was such an interesting take on slavery and its consequences.
The chapter where Sethe speaks in 1st person to Beloved explaining her actions & saying she wished she could lay in her grave with her was one of the most beautiful and heart breaking things I’ve ever read
Yeah it’s a f***ing outstanding story
In college I wrote about the ironic consequences of slavery and freedom in the novel that was pretty well received if you wanna read that interpretation
But yeah it’s filled with insanely crushing moments

my first kazuo ishiguro novel... I really enjoyed it, I went in with no clue what the story was about and I think that's the best way to experience this book. definitely gave me a lot to ponder about by the time I was done. good writing, strong themes, and an engaging premise. too slow in some moments and too fast in others but overall I liked it. I'll have to check out the movie soon and see how well they adapted it.
They made us read this freshman year of high school, was a bit much but I enjoyed it

Damn freshman year?! a little much for sure. I often wonder if reading a book like this would’ve kept me interested back in school, I doubt it tho. the fact reports, essays, and grades were attached to reading back then, it wouldn’t have changed my perception regardless of what I was reading.

what starts out as something almost childlike, quickly devolves into a grotesque and chaotic story of three individuals who don't fit into society.
honestly I didn't know what to expect and after finishing, I don't even really know what to think of what I just read. What I do know is that Sayaka Murata is a talented writer and I want to read more of her work. this story here... is a mindfuck, i'm going to have to sit with this one for a while.

yea that's the one that put her on the map. gonna try to read one of the two soon.
she's definitely one of the most celebrated contemporary Japanese authors along with Mieko Kawakami, tho I wasn't too impressed with Breasts and Eggs

have you read anything by Yoko Ogawa or Banana Yoshimito?
I know those are pretty prominent Japanese authors as well that I want to dive into

Finished the Basketball Diaries by Jim Caroll recently and loved it, would recommend to anyone

Finished Lolita yesterday - 3.5/5
Just as interesting and moving as it is deeply disturbing. I understand why a lot of people won’t read it but I think everyone should read it at least once. The book’s forward (written by a fictitious editor) immediately tells you you’re dealing with a p*do and that the book is basically his confession/memoir written from prison. There’s a lot of wittiness and comical puns throughout the book and truly beautiful prose. I gave it 3.5 stars because the writing got a bit too purple for my liking at times to the point where it was almost unbearable to read (like when there’s 2 long ass chapters dedicated to just describing scenery and landmarks as the main character is on a road trip all over America). But this book does take a really interesting turn from sick love story to mystery/detective story that I enjoyed a lot.

Just finished this earlier this week, a f***ing banger. Highly suggest it to anyone, including those who are not religious, tells a really cool story throughout.
