I thought Joker 1 was decent if overrated. With all the negative reviews and my lack of faith in Todd Phillips pulling off a musical, I expected to hate this. Actually thought it was kinda good although admittedly flawed. 7/10

What the last time they see a musical in theater

Just got out of Joker 2 @Beach_kneega @Oblivion23 @hasa

Expected to hate it given the reception.

Raw thoughts: Courtroom stuff was slow af. bomb scene was such an asspull. Loved the musical numbers. Cinematography was peak. Joaquin Phoenix is still an amazing actor.

I don’t see how people can hate this movie besides it being slow af at some parts. Smooth 7/10 IMO but imma sleep on it

It’s a combo of a lot of things. First it came out during that weird in between COVID period where WB put their movies on HBO Max day 1, so that diminished the audience there. Then, the last Suicide Squad while successful was not looked back on fondly by most. Then minorly, you have Birds of Prey which didn’t do well either and the lead actress from that carried over to TSS.

As for me, I sort of resist the sugary sweetness of them. “Corny” comes to mind. I also just don’t really like most show-tunes, musically. I’m into more lowkey s*** like Sweeney Todd, Once, The Muppets, Willy Wonka, South Park.

Again as you well know I'm not sayin there's anything wrong from remakes or drawing inspiration from other films it's literally what I'm saying regarding derivative with a twist and scorseses is a remake with an American twist, it's just wild to try and slander joker 1 now with this "oh it was a rip off of king of comedy" like he literally said in interviews he's taking inspiration from it. To say it's ok for one director and not for another is wild lol

1) This is not something people say now, they were saying this when it dropped.

2) I never said one was okay and the other wasn't. I don't hate Joker 1 for being a King Of Comedy ripoff, I think it's fine on some days and mid on other days. I take umbrage with how people try to make joker 1 seem deeper than it is when it's not that profound. I don't even like Joker 2 but in certain ways Todd actually tries to deviate and do his own thing and take more risks than do what is expected of him. But by doing a musical twist people act like the reputation of the film series is soiled when it was just.. whatever. It's nowhere near the top 5 of movies that dropped in 2019 lol

And for the record I'm not a big fan of The Departed either

Sure, you could make that argument that Scorsese got better films, but when you stack up some high profile remakes like the one for Oldboy and the one for REC (Quarantine), Departed is pretty impressive

But it doesn't make The Departed any less impressive. I do get having a director who's set such a high bar for themselves, but I won't even lie, I'd pick Departed over Irishman or Casino any day. As a film in its own right, it's very good.

Ngl Departed just dont hit me for like that off the 1+2 punch of me liking other Scorsese movies better and Infernal Affairs being better.
