Once you start picking out lines like that you’re forever relevant as a rap listener because what we doing when we listen to Redman and Big L? Then punches and fun lyrics is cool again right? F*** outta here. Yall choose what you accept based on who you like or think is cool. The boy is one of the slickest with wordplay and punchlines ever and yall cling to it as a supposed weakness just because some of them are deceptively simple

Drake offers no substance for a grown person and he only has on rare occasions over his 15+ year career. I don’t need to comb through bars to figure that out, it’s a feature of his work.

If he’s one of your favorite writers and you’re 30+, idk what to say man

There are many who argue Kendrick is one of the best if not the best lyricist in hip hop history.

His stans remind you of his pulitzer prize once a day.

    meanwhile at OVO records…

That’s a ridiculous notion but also drake is the only rapper that is held to this weird “adulthood” standard. Yall say this but listen to a Kanye who offers less in the songwriting and introspection departments. Drake is one of the most introspective rappers, there’s a major disconnect happening when people suggest there’s no substance to his raps

We’re not comparing him to Kanye right now. We’re comparing him to Jay, and Jay sounded more mature, poised and reflective on Reasonable Doubt than Drake has in his whole career, to say nothing of Blueprint, Black Album or 4:44. Hell, a MBDTF is way beyond anything Drake can do as a character deconstruction.

If you want to compare him to Future or whatever, that’s cool, but I need more if we’re talking the greatest pens ever. Andre, Black Thought, Nas, etc

Drake raps every line like he thinks is the hardest s*** ever said. The guys you mentioned can switch up the inflection in their voice. Drake is just always so monotone. If Redman was gonna say some cartoonish s*** like that cheese grater line he’d match the energy in how he said it with a cartoonish tone. Drake don’t know how to do that so his bars like that just sound egregious because he’s saying them so seriously

Iceman is leagues beyond MBDTF as a look into the mind of an MC. To me Kanye has never put out anything believable. Hov and Drake are very different but I think drakes vulnerability gets glossed over in these discussions. People focus on the vices and the women similar to how they said Hov was money cash hoes. But there’s a lot more than that in Drake’s raps.

I’m sorry bro, I didn’t read past the first sentence. I’m sure you tried to say something of substance, but I don’t want to argue with you when we’re this far apart in opinion.

You can like Iceman, but it’s a pretty pathetic example of a nearly 40 year old man at a crossroads.

Tbf only someone like prime Wayne could get away with a bar like that these days

Wayne had hella detractors because of his lyrics, the whole "rhyme nigga with nigga" meme. Meanwhile these Drake fans are defending these bars tooth and nail with their whataboutisms to d***ride Iceman instead of just acknowledging his rapping is amazing at points but also pretty awful at other points on the album

These niggas are just d***riders who want to feel like they're part of a winning team. Seen how they moved after HNVM fw sales, how they moved after Euphoria dropped etc. Ironically the same kind of fake/fickle people Drake keeps crying about in his songs

I like Reasonable Doubt but I feel like it's an unfair comparison. The subject matter on each album is entirely different and even then, Drake gets unfair criticism imo regardless of whether he's venting (which people see as not being able to move on) or being braggadocious (to which people say they don't wanna see him 'act tough'). I thought the album was arguably his most mature and direct one yet

I’m convinced yall focus on the simplest most in your face lines because those are the only ones yall even catch
