If I had to name two rappers who blew up off some poppy rap nobody took very seriously only to scale it back out of nowhere with a boom bappy purist project over some lo-fi loops
That doesn’t describe WMWTSO production tho, listen to just The Star Room and tell me anything on here sounds remotely close to that
This album feels like talk therapy but Jack only has his own personality and life experience to interrogate which is as relatable as it is generic. At least that's how it feels when he's talking women or family or celebrity or privilege or any super broad topic.
I think GGG approaches cancel culture from a social, personal angle that I haven't really heard before. It Can't Be is kind of a reply to the opener, and taken together recognize his whiteness but also totally excuse it which is... contradictory but I think an almost accidental look at how celebs rationalize their position even without bringing race into it.
Cool that he even attempted such a stripped down, focused rap project at all. It definitely held my attention more than any of his other full lengths.
imo he faces the issue a lot of people do when it comes to music (or general writing/art): his life is simply not interesting enough to touch topics on a deep structural level for others to extrapolate from
i think for what it is he does a good job, and i give him props for trying, esp when he very easily could gone the low hanging fruit route and just made more generic pop.
that said, i can tell the dude just doesnt have enough to say more overtly. i dont think him only touching surface level stuff is a lack of theoretical skill, i think its because he just doesnt have the experience or depth of perspective to be able to write something deeper. thus everything comes out feeling like a diet version of others' perspective which have been explored a billion times over. that said, as he gets older this could change, so who knows
You guys really don't hear Mac Miller?
there’s literally no similarities in their music
Out on no respect for Mac in this verse. I liked this album from Jack but Mac was 100x the artist that Jack ever will be
Yeah f*** the Mac disrespect.
why y'all comparing Jack and Mac? just cause they both white lmao. If you had to compare Jack to anyone, it's Drake. Jack is just Diet Drake, and not in a bad way.
these beats are so good would have loved to hear some other rappers on them.
Man I remember you used to always show dude love

?? i said his beats are good i am showing love tho

Took that as you meaning that you'd like to hear other people on the beats instead of him
But my dawg was talking additive
my bad for being sleep hating

My little review of a few tracks:
Common Ground: I really don’t understand the purpose of this track. He’s just saying something everyone already knows is a thing. Obviously black culture has had a major effect on kids in white suburbia but he himself is guilty of the s*** he says in the song. It’s just a very tone deaf song
Gang Gang Gang: I actually really like the idea of this song. Going back home and finding out s*** about old friends. I’ve had this happen everytime I go visit my hometown. Finding out some of my closest friends growing up are dead, In jail, or did something unspeakable is a weird ass feeling. I wish he would’ve talked more about how it made him feel instead of boiling it down to “sometimes you gotta cancel your friends”. It’s a lot harder and more complicated then that.
It Can’t Be: This the dumbest song on here. Nobody is denying Jack has talent and skill but he’s literally saying “me being white had absolutely nothing to do with my success” which like.. come on dude. This also sounds even more stupid after hearing the intro track. This honestly some Tom McDonald ass s***. Eminem was way more authentic then Jack, He actually grew up with the culture and straight up said my skin color is a huge reason for my career being so successful
Overall I think Jack heard all the people saying they wanted more deep stuff after his last album and this was his response. I feel like he kinda struggles to understand the difference between deep and “woke”
Lol
oh brother
I didn't mean the song was necessarily amazing or deep or anything, it was just a topic I've never heard discussed in a rap song before.
