Yes by critics and the industry but I’ve never cared about their opinion lol. Replayability is the biggest metric of how I judge music and Kendrick’s always fallen short outside of gkmc and damn. If I don’t feel like playing your album a year later, it’s not worth much to me.

That replayabilty is part of the “timelessness” part of determining if something is a classic which is why I laugh when he’s given so many classics. I judge Kanye, Drake, Future, and Cole by the same metric and they just happen to make more enjoyable music imo

Such an elementary view on music and art in general

I haven't played GKMC or NWTS in a while besides hold on we're going home last year, but does that make those albums not great? The whole replay value thing as the end all be all factor in evaluating the staying power of an album has always been silly because I'm a mood sequencer when it comes to music and there's so much music out there at every turn

    Exactly
I think I listen to far too many varieties of music to be spinning back on old stuff too often unless I'm in that mood

Like right now I have Octane and Fall Off in heavy rotation and Im sure Brent and Keem s*** finna join that rotation--but before I know it I'll probably back to listening to a bunch of obscure s*** from my spotify likes

  • ryuH

I bump LAD at least once or twice a year

I can’t listen to AEOM straight through I think it’s overrated personally MATW and Makaveli better

spinning mo money mo problems on an annual basis like a ritual is kinda nuts but you got it

and I guess as a counter argument to my point, I listen to no more pain and heartz of men at least a few times every other year

ya’ll tripping lmfao. I just added The Fall-Off to my already long ass 2 hour J. Cole playlist and just go between the 2

same for any other artists. makes the old music and the new music sound 10x better

But like what is the connection though, because I'm just acknowledging that I, like brodie over here, listen to whatever my mood shifts to, plus obscure s*** /new artists I discover . This doesn't sound that crazy to me.

my playlist isn’t just a random assortment of the artists music, I have it built to sequence through each project the artist has drop across the 2+ hours or however long

the point is to show how much the artist has changed over the career yet still kept that essence of what made me like them. for example on my cole playlist, the first 10 songs all flow well together AND are from 6 different projects lol

I can exit that and just go straight to the new album if I want any time and jump back and forth. it makes the new album sound even better cause you can hear the minor attention to details that separate it from the older work and also within the playlist against the old music.

like going from A M A R I to GOMD to Poor Thang

Sounds good: you get to see the artist's progression. You can still create playlists while discovering new music. It's not really about picking a lane and sticking to it.

    I just think there's levels

like I'm not listening to All Eyez on Me and Life After Death all the f***in' time but they're considered classics by most metrics and hiphop standards. S*** I wouldn't be surprised if most people don't listen to those albums very often really

I mean those albums are old af so they get more leeway and even then they have classic songs that still get played

Mannnn I can’t get over how good this album turned out… Cole catalog needed this s*** man…

his old mixtapes set the foundation with FNL being an all time great mixtape, and the truly yours EPs being great as well, FHD is that essential nostalgic classic even the casuals love, The Off-Season was absolute fire and had some great flows but The Fall Off officially makes this nigga a goat in my eyes.

S*** like a double album Black Album if you sub Jay’s pen for Nas and sprinkle in some Kast and other southern elements. S*** is just great. Can’t see how anyone who loved hip-hop and gives this a thorough listen doesn’t walk away from this impressed.
